Hi there you all,

New member here, have a genuine Rolex 1655 and a Senna Tag CAR2A1L.BA0688, came here looking to expand my collection a little and finding the silly Rolex waiting lists infuriating.

Recently sat with a business associate who always wore genuine watches, and eyed a new Daytona on his wrist and asked him how much it was. He said it was a 'super clone' and I asked him if I could see and hold it, wondering what this fancy new moniker may mean. I feel I have an ability to spot a fake and can usually do it quickly, partly thanks to my 1655 being a daily wear for a very long time. I legit would say it's the first time I couldn't tell! Incredible. Hence one of the reason's I've ended up here now.

What a fantastic resource I seem to have stumbled upon. A huge thank you to all the mods, members, and contributors for all the work you've all put in to create, what seems so far, an invaluable treasure trove of information and contacts.

Hello and welcome to RWI!

You found the right place!

Love that story... I bet your business associate is quite the character. Not everyone would have the confidence to immediately admit to wearing a replica. Well, I do so myself most of the times. But that has less to do with great confidence or self-esteem and more with not having any control over my big mouth in social settings. 😆🤪😂

Anyway, as you already noticed, you joined at the perfect time. Replica watches have reached a level that is quite "scary" and I feel like every gen owner, who may not even be interested in buying reps, would do themselves a huge favor by at least reading and learning here, because this is the only place left where you can truly educate yourself about reps. YouTube videos or blogs that teach you "how to spot a fake" maybe were once helpful with identifying reps back in 2004, but not with today's high-end stuff.

If you haven't already, please take some time to read the sticky threads in the new members area (in all subsections), as they contain lots of information for newcomers and, most importantly, our forum rules which you need to know, and of course ideally to follow, to get the best out of your experience on RWI!

Wow was not expecting such a well thought out reply! That was a delight to read. I had thought the essence of forums and the great characters that were pillars of them all had seemed to have moved on. It's nice to have been proven wrong. The whole world became so fast paced it has honestly been lovely to put the brakes on with my feet up and read threads, and like you said, take in all the info over the decades and up to todays high end stuff. There's even things that I did not know at all that existed, like the Blaken Rolex's, which are mind boggling to look at. If I ever saw someone wearing one I'd have been baffled but having access to the info here has given me ever more knowledge of what's available in the gen world too. Love that.

I've a ton of questions in my head at the moment but am enjoying slowly finding the answers. As we know though, the journey is sometimes more fun than the goal!

Once again, lovely to have come across you :)

Matt - welcome....I'm pretty new as well. Ironically, have a few gen's myself....but ended up here because I want a 1655 but can't go gen lol. You've already got the grail watch, but I'm working on a 1655 rep at the moment so I can use that for a daily....hopefully should be "done" soon!

Oh wow didn't expect any further replies to my initial post - nice to meet you, Nathan.

Which gens do you have? And I'm guessing you can't go gen on the 1655 because of the price. Fun fact - around 2005 the Rolex AD offered circa £1k for the 1655 in part exchange against a panda two tone YM. What an insult.

If you need any pics of the 1655 from weird angles lol or anything to help with your build I'm just a message or pm away!

Also, wouldn't you say the Paul Newman Daytona is the Holy Grail watch?

Currently of 'namebrand' recognition a blue dial YM 126622, polar 16570, oysterquartz 17000, and some other assorted oddball gens. While I do dig the Daytona's, currently the 1655 is more of my grail just because it fits my off-the-beaten-path taste :). Ideally looking for a '75 1655 at some point in my life (but yes, the entry price points on these have gotten nuts!). Maybe someday...but for now a rep 1655 will at least allow me to gauge whether I really want/need one down the road....

On your 1655 what year/MK is it? And how has the dial aged over the years? I've seen quite a few different dial colors, some where the indices have gone albino but ideally I want the tan/cream color that I think complements the black dial nicely.
