Help to decide on whether to buy a gen or more reps

Hi guys,

Recently, I found that Steinhart is producing a limited edition pilot watch. 'www.steinhartwatches.de/index.php?id=80&sitename=Pilot'

I managed to get myself on the reserve list (no obligation) and I think that it is a great watch at $550 inclusive of shipping + box. This is about $100 higher than the HBBs, but you get a Eta 2824-2.

So the question I have is whether to go GEN and get this... or save my moolah for more reps.

To tell you the truth, I like having a 'branded' rep, but this GEN doesn't have a 'brand name' on the dial, which is cool. Besides a GEN Tag I bought about 15 years ago, none of my other watches cost more than $400.

So should I go GEN and get something limited edition, or is 2 reps a better way to go? I know that its all personal choice, but would appreciate your comments. Also, any advice on the said watch or Steinhart would also be great.

Thanks!

I go with reps because I'm vain. You know the quality of reps is so good now. For a non-chrono movement, I go with ETA. I can have almost anything under $300, AR coated sapphire and all. For chrono, still around $300 to 400 for most models with Asian 7750. I was playing with my friend's Breitling Evolution with an Asian 7750 for less than $300. Man, is it nice! It keeps good time and the chrono works well. On the wrist, it has a great presence. Big and very eye catching. I can't go back to paying $500 for a simple movement.

That Steinhart is a sharp watch. I especially like the strap that comes on it. If pilot watches "do it" for you, this is a good one. I think the Archimede is about that same price with mineral crystal, so the price is more than fair, IMO.

I say go gen...

My next watch is a Fortis. Then a rep. I'd say it depends on the gen and on the rep. :D

Check out this link in Replica Discussion: http://replica-watch.info/forum/viewtop ... highlight=

I thought that when Steinhart came out with this new b-uhr, they were going to fix the thickness issue with this watch. I have the original big pilot, which I love (see pics on the link). It is 14mm thick also. However, the problem is that the crown is so big, it sits below the bottom of the watch, and digs into your wrist. Believe me, it is very uncomfortable, unless you mount it on a bund style strap, as I did. Too bad, really, because the strap that comes with the watch is sweet. As for which one to choose, hmmmmm, thats a tough one. If you want a pilots watch, I don't think you can get a better one for the price.

That's a very tough call...with many reps as well-made as they are, choosing a comparably-priced gen over a rep is not a clear cut decision for me. Especially for a gen that costs under $700, there isn't often a difference in quality. If anything, I really feel that the nicer reps (Ultimate PO, a number of Pams, the new expensive IWC reps, etc) have a higher level of quality and fit and finish than a lot of gens. Of course, they don't come with a warranty.

I personally would probably be more likely to choose the rep 3717 over a gen pilot that retailed for $500 just because I like the way it looks and don't consider any of my rep watches as throwaways--meaning if they ever stop working, I'll have them fixed, as most of them can be serviced like any other watch and perform as any normal watch.

But as you can see, a lot of people feel differently and would rather have any model of gen over a rep given a similar price point. It just depends on what you like, really.

I can only answer your question with another question:

Would you rather make sweet love to Jessica Biel or an Asian hooker that looks like Jessica Biel?

Gens are the real thing, Reps are counterfeit imitations.........think about it.

Is Jessica Biel going to charge me money?

YES!! She charges $5,000 per 15 minutes, and will not cover the cost of the motel room. The hooker charges $350 per 15 minutes, and eats the cost of the room.

At that price, I will take 14 Asian hookers that looks like Jessica Biel.

But also, not all women are Jessica Biel. Some women are the fat girl across the hall. She has a pretty face, but she's no supermodel.

My point is only that saying gen = gen and rep = rep is a little too black and white for me. The condition of an article being "not a replica" does not, for me, automatically mean that it should have a great deal of esteem or be valued so much more highly.

To speak to both sides of the fence though, you will never have to lie about, be ashamed of, or hide a gen . Maybe a Swatch I guess. Or a really expensive quartz watch. A lot of it is really just psychological.
