Help Identify this Explorer (6610) - Does it exist, and is this gen?

Weird, isn't it? You'd think that a brand as big as Rolex would have their stuff well documented, either from way back, or recently compiled. Heck, Rolex themselves should probably release some good literature on all models that they've ever churned out - given the sorta vintage market their watches have. Instaed of leaving it to the enthusiasts to shoot in the dark.

Guess at the moment, everyone's got bits and pieces, and its well nigh impossible to confirm what's adsolutely right and what are "maybes", etc. Sigh.

Glad to help out. I love old Explorers, but there just isn't a whole lot of information out there, unlike for vintage Subs and Daytonas. I do see some thick magazines every now and then, but they're always in Japanese!

That's the Rolex paradox. Even though the evolution of its designs has been extremely slow, and even though most of its fans love the old and familiar, the company is perpetually at Year Zero. Rolex won't lift a finger to verify a vintage piece, and is downright hostile when it comes to supplying parts. "Sorry, we can't say a thing about your 1680, but wouldn't you rather have this cool ceramic Sub?"

Anyway, I leafed through a friend's copy of Vintage Rolex Sports Models and took the following notes. I know that Skeet/Urul aren't gospel, but they do have their merits!

There were four versions of the 6610, all of which were gilt/gloss-dialed, and all of which were marked OCC:
-V1 had a red depth rating and pencil hands, similar to the earliest 6200-series Submariners. This might be what the guy on VRF meant.
-V2 was the same, but with the familiar Mercedes hands. Note that most of these hands were of the long-neck variety, which may also be what VRF guy meant!
-V3 is the same as the previous type, but without the depth rating, and with a sweep hand painted white.
-V4 has a honeycomb dial, similar to the ones found on the 6350.

Furthermore, 1016 is noted as being the first Explorer with SCOC markings. However, this is contradicted by a lot of stuff that has already been noted in this thread. Someone on TRF asserted that the change from OCC to SCOC happened in '57, but I don't know if you can draw a clean dividing line through that year. However, I remain pretty sure that you would not have seen a matte dial Explorer in the 1950s.

Hey LHOOQ, been a hectic few days - thanks for taking the time to check out further on the 6610 - I'm definitely giving up on that piece...however... saw THIS at another shop just the other day. A 1016, caseback dates it to 67 (I know the 6 isn't too clear in the photo), 1570 (again, 5 looks blurry) non-hacking. Apparently original dial and hands, though I'm gonna need your advice on this. What do you think? The bezel is pitted, but, then again, adds to the vintage character.

Did what I could with my meagre camera skills:

Where do you find all of these Explorers? I know they're only two, but I wish I had that many available for sale near me!

This one looks correct. The dial and hands do look original and are in excellent shape. That's a really nice shade of yellow on the markers. Even the domed crystal appears to be original. The movement looks amazing, but I do worry about the encroaching rust around the gasket. You'll want that looked at soon after purchasing.

Everything else... excellent!

Haha - where are you at? Yeah, like you said, they are only two...I don't recall ever seeing any before this... but, then again, I've never really looked for these before. I'm in Malaysia - and I don't think the vintage watch appreciation bug has really caught on here. So, most of the older folks would probably be happy to just sell their old watches, with no real idea of how much they may be worth, just to recoup some money to buy a newer watch.

As for this particular one.... it's listed at around USD3,800. I do intend to negotiate for it..... how much do you think is a fair value?

This was on display at a watchsmith, who was trying to help one of his old customers to sell. He'll take care of the rust for me, if I get it.

I'm not far away, in the Philippines, and I've never seen a 1016 in a shop. There have been a few private sellers, but they always want far too much.

$3800 is fair, if a bit on the high side given the condition and missing bits. As I mentioned earlier, a correct 7836 bracelet won't be cheap. If you'd prefer a 78360, maybe a friendly service center (do those still exist?) can help you out. I'd shoot for $3000, and be happy paying a few hundred more. Heck, at that price I'd be tempted to fly over!

Strange how things turn out....you start out looking for a fairly recent 16710 coke, with lume (how can I wear a watch without lume?!?!?!)....and end up wanting (and badly) a 1016 (with dead lume!).... gonna go call the shop up now and see if they'll drop the price....heh :)

Edit: Right, $3,150 is as low as I can get it..... Sigh, now I just gotta make the call....decisions, decisions.....
