I was at an aquaintances office today discussing watches. Anyway, his work mate comes in and says he just bought a genuine Panerai. Now these guys aren't short of cash by any stretch of the immagination so obviously I would have never doubted for a second that he would have bought a genuine Panny.

Anyway he brings out the box, and it all looks pretty good. The box was definately NOT a rep box. It was very well executed and had a proper nickle Panerai engraved plate in it. Anyway the screwdriver was proper as was the rubber strap. So far so good. He then takes the wrap off the watch and hands it to me. WELL....it had the 0035/1000 serial number, and the Officine Panerai engraving was slightly off. It was without a doubt a FAKE. He then shows me the paperwork that came with it and it had the CertifiDato certificate, the single page csoc certificate and no manual.

He then tells me he paid $3K for it, THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS....

I didn't have the heart to tell him he got fucked.

Should I have told him?

I don't know....

The fact that he would specifically say "genuine panerai" would make me a little skeptical. Do you think he knew it was a rep and just lied about the cost? If it really is a rep I don't think I would have the heart to tell him, but paying 3 K...yikes!

I wonder where he bought it?

I would ask where he bought it, and then encourage him to have it checked out by a dealer, mentioning all the horror stories and unscrupulous people out there. Let them tell him.

He said ebay and it was posted from Germany.

He knows about reps for sure, which is why he said that the panerai was genuine. Maybe he was trying to pull the wool over my eyes or maybe he really got ripped off.

Yep,, he sure does,, classic "hollywooding" mentioning "genuine" .. .who walks around saying I've got a genuine... whatever unless they are trying hard to convince someone that a fake is a genuine.

Or maybe it's a genuine because it does not say "OfiChina Panerfaux" ? yep,, that makes it gen..

Unless you would suffer some kind of work consequence's, I'd have told him straight out it's fake.

results of telling someone they got f@cked...

so, while out for drinks last night i bumped into him...told him to sit down, i had something to tell him...ordered a couple of single malts, and said "you got f@cked, your watch is a fake." I then went on to tell him what the signs were, such as the 0035 serial number, the off set panerai engraving on the movement, and the fact that his warranty card had a number of spelling mistakes on it.

He told me to sod off, and that i was jealous because since i was wearing a fake, I couldn't afford a genuine.

well, when the drinks arrived, i grabbed them both and walked away.

if he's clueless i would definitely tell them. but if he's a potential poser by bragging and showing off, i would keep it quite. :p
