So yea. I went to this party today for a barbecue wearing my Bentley GT.

It was in a backyard... About half-way into the party my friend comes up to me and tells me that my watch is fake! So I give him a puzzled look and say what are you talking about? He says that some young guy at this party is a jeweler/watch dealer and he told him and a bunch of people that my watch is fake!

So I come up to this guy and pull him to the side and ask him why he thinks that my watch is fake. He asks to to take it off and I do.

So now I'm like damn he's gonna call me out on the font. But no, he pushes the button for the chronometer; it works. He still maintains that he has experience selling watches for 7 years and he is sure it is a fake. I press on for him to tell me why. He turns the watch over so I think he's gonna say something about the 't' not being crossed. Nope all is good here. He finally rotates the bezel and says that it should not rotate freely like this on the gen, and when he tried to set the time he said that the hour markers should rotate clockwise when adjusting the time, not counter-clockwise.

He also tried to open the caseback at which point I was like uhm.. what are you doing? So he handed it back to me and I said I would take it up with the person I bought it from...

This defininetly was not a pleasant expericen and I think this guy is an a**hole no? I mean he went around telling everyone he could find that my watch was a fake! I mean why would he do that.
And what has me even MORE curious is the fact the he knew it was a fake by looking at it from my wrist, yet all the way he explained that it was fake were by touching it and moving the handles and bezel. He also said the bracelet didnt look right when he was holding it... But how was he able to deterine this by looking at it while it was on my wrist! Thoughts/Comments? What should I have said?

You should have told him to f#$k off! Just because he can't afford a decent watch, it doesn't mean everyone else is a looser too.
He didn't know, that it's a rep. He was just trying to get you. Next time don't take your watch off for anyone.

Sounds like he was bluffing. Do you look like you should be wearing that watch? That would be the number one reason for someone to doubt, I'd think.

It's my opinion that the guy is pretty classless to go around telling people it's a fake but it's likely that's not what happened although it sounds like it from your story. What I could see happening is them standing around talking about watches/jewellery and either someone pointed you out and asked about your watch and he said it was a fake or he sized you up from a distance and guessed that your watch was fake (cause I don't buy it that he could tell from far away; and definitely not based on what you said happened when you handed him the watch) and used it as an example of his skills. I doubt he just went around pointing out that your watch wasn't real.

As to what you should have said, I'd have called him on his bull. I'd have said, "Okay sure, if you had opened the caseback, you'd see that my watch is a replica. But I don't think you could tell that from a distance and nothing you said seems to indicate that you knew from far away." Then I'd have laughed and said, "It's a good one isn't it?"

man that story gets my blood boiling, I can imagine how you must have felt. You showed good restraint by not popping him right in the face.
I guess you could have explained how rude it was of him to tell everyone it was a fake before even talking to you. Maybe you could have made him feel bad enough to tell the rest of the guests he could have been wrong...but by then 95% of the damage was already done (if any...maybe most didn't give a sh**). He was probably just taking a guess that you didn't fit the image of a Breitling for Bentley owner (whatever he thinks that is).

Either way...he very likely was just compensating for weak social skills by putting you down/showing off to the other guests, maybe that is to be pitied.

That guy is VERY wrong for doing that. And he is only cutting your legs to look taller. I would have said, yeah it's a fake so what? What are you wearing?? Oh yeah, nothing.

well.

OK.

The man is an asshole.

Risk is: when you wear a fake, make sure it is the best one.

99% of fakes will be called on the minute they are handled by someone who has some kind of experience with watches.

Always refuse to let shitheads like that handle your watches. Tell them it is too expensive "for just anybody to handle" , make them feel like dirt then walkaway with a smile.

Let them wonder all day and all nite.

if he didn't call you out for the lack of ar he was just guessing. the hours turn clock wise one way and counter clock wise the other depending which way you rotate the crown, that was stupid. the bezel rotating too freely? yours could be worn and too free. the bracelet on those is very good and was a stupid guess for him to try and make. the tell tale from across the room for those is the lack of ar coating. if he didn't catch that when he had it in his hand he was bluffing you and he knew nothing about breitlings because you can see it from across the room .

he was bluffing you man, he was just another know it all dumass.

well.

Anybody who is has the senseless audacity to show up at an AD with a fake should be prepared for anything including a public humiliation.
I mean, get real, we all know there are different kinds of people in this world including assholes and you just happened to come across one...

The way to be always prepared: never be seen at an AD with a fake on.

I believe he was at a BBQ not an AD.

Maxse, the guy's just an a**hole who jumped to conclusions without even bothering to read/hear/test the item. In a case like this when an "expert" calls you out, just shrug it off man, the burden of proof rests on them. And they better back their crap up! Or they will look a fool.

And yes you outdid yourself PF. Very quick come back.

thanks guys! Yea this was at a picnic/party at a back-yard. That guy is really a jewler for 7 years and I dont usually le tpeople handle my watch but I figured if I didn't then it would be obvious that it is a fake. So I non-chalantly gave it to him and was getting ready to smile when he would point out the font or lack of AR or the "t" not being crossed. But he proceeded t push the chronometer button!

BTW he might be right about the bezel not supposed to be moving. I dont think it suposed to turn on the GT like on the navi should it?

But I mean WTF none of the things this guy did pointed to something he would have noticed from far away! Thats what pissed me off! But he was really ready to take off the caseback like he tried to turn it with his thumb! At which point I was like "what are you doing..."

But I mean he was right wasn't he? That's why I couldnt say anything because I didnt know enough about breitlings. But after he didnt call me out on the font or AR but whatever I never held a gen bracelet so I though tmaybe it was a givaway. But how could he tell while it's on the wrist! The crazy thing is that he was right! WTF?

I usually dress the part and totally look like I can pull the watch off but it was a barbecue so I just wore a wife-beater and some jeans... (It was very casual) And I never met him before. But still I dont understand why he would go around telling people. Im sure someone commented on the watch and he said its faker and then told someone else etc... But still...

Oh and the worst part was that when we went back to the table in front of everyone he goes... Yea it's a good one and it MIGHT be worth up to $200.

This conversation would have went as follows with me:

"Hey man, my buddy says your watch is a fake, He's been a dealer for 7 years and hows his shit."

"Great....tell him I said thanks and to go FU@K himself and if he comes near me, he can also taste it to see if its a gen"

Complete A-HOLE move on his part maxse.

That's pretty weak. The guy is obviously a dick.

It's one thing to say that he thinks it might not be real if asked about it but another to try and put a complete stranger down.

As I said before, very classless.

Yes I have been there....
I know how you feel....But I can't believe you really thought your replica was intended to fool people into thinking it was a Gen....especially people who handle them either daily at the workplace or a bonafide enthusiast who knows.

I almost think there are two kinds of people when buying replicas.
#1 is the guy who thinks his rep looks exactly like the Gen without even comparing them side by side..
I mean if you are going to get called out atleast hit up the dude head on....
Next time tell him or her Yeah, it's fake dude....I mean it's you VS the "watch dealer." Next time sell yourself if you are worried of being called out...

#2 Is the guy who knows his rep is nowhere near the Gen in terms of being identical and realizes it WILL be only a matter of time when it will be called out and acts accordingly i.e, not surprised and defeated.
This guy roughly knows that he purchased an Illegal good, and although he knows imitation is the biggest form of flattery, deep down he knows he couldn't afford the real McCoy, OR he could but figured he could save thousands by purchasing a rep, thereby defeating the purpose of having the Gen, and all it's "glory" and commradory it yields Or just knowing it is real....

Anyone that deals with and/or handles Gens will see your replica stick out like a sore thumb.
Shake it off, man it's no big deal. Your watch IS a rep and he was right. The situation is over but it you are really concerned with what others think perhaps you should get the Gen and be done with it.

Ps-No one it seems can handle the hard truth.....

In closing, enjoy your rep but try only to understand you must take it all of the positive with a tad bit of negativity associated with having a rep, and wearing it for anyone to see and criticize, though unsolicited..

-Still, this fool should have ethically have come to you like a man and should have atleast given
you the common courtesy of asking you to your face without embarassing you...
