Personally I think this only happens on Oysterflex Gold models. The rubber rubbing on the case traps moisture and causes consistent tarnishing.

I own 2 more gold replicas and neither have tarnished at all.

I'm actually looking to get a two tone bluesy soon so we'll see how that goes haha
Thanks for sharing this! I'm a new member, and JUST purchased a john mayer daytona rep. (Waiting on the qc pics now) I'm very glad to hear that you have had some good experience with gold reps.

Thank you for this review. I recently bought a BTF Daytona 116508 (Black dial) in yellow gold. I took off the metal bracelet and bought an oysterflex strap and endlinks, to preserve the metal bracelet from tarnishing and gold plating wearing off. After reading that the rubber strap accelerates tarnishing of the case, I quickly went back to the metal bracelet.

Here's a question; since inevitably my watch will tarnish, economically speaking, should I have the case and bracelet de-plated, and get a new dial and hands to make it like a steel model (like a 116500) or should I re-plate it in 18k? After re-plating, won't it tarnish again? Is removal of the gold plating expensive?

I too was about to get the John Mayer but went with the Black dial version. The John Mayer Daytona looks amazing! Did you get a Clean or BTF?

Keep it as it is. You will be safe for 1-3 years mostly sure. Then you can plate it new.

I bought this watch because I was very happy with a Hulk VSF I purchased two years ago. I actually think this watch feels and looks better and the movement feels more like a gen movement than the 11 reference Hulk. Nonetheless the process was extremely smooth.

Half the time or less than two years ago. I'm really digging the watch. Thanks again Andrew!

PS- I tried to upload a photo but it didn't want to take.

Ok I'm just realizing this needed to go under trusted dealer reviews. My fault for having more than one RWI window open. Sorry. Mods please remove. Thanks.

My brother @Reaps use vinegar. Regular vinegar. Scrub it on there with a soft toothbrush

Do that a few times. let it sit for around 20-30 mins. It should be a foamy mess.

Wash it off. Do it again.

After that, verryyyyyy lightly rub it with a gold polishing cloth or cape cod.

It'll be gone.

Vinegar removes the oxidized parts of the lower layers. The polishing cloth well, polishes the gold plate lol

Throw silica bags in the compartment of the watch. Do not use soap to clean it. Water only. Do not rub it. Dry it off with hair dryer.
Trust me.

For me, gold replicas are not watches to wear every day.... it's not gold, so it won't hold up to sweat and the rest over time.

You must enjoy detailing the watch. I will wax, wipe, and clean it just like I do my cars and I still don't wear it every day

I try to stay away from plated watches. Case in point, even GEN "gold filled" watches and those infamous GEN Cartier Tanks in "Vermeil" which is multiple times thicker than anything plated, look like sh*t after some years. Gold plated watches have an early expiration date, comparable to good ceramic coating on a car. It's just not for me.
