Hi everybody,
as I am a fan of the GMT complication in watches in general I asked myself which one might be the right GMT for me when I got infected with the PANERAI virus...I can assure you at least one thing...there is only one answer to this question...one is definitely not enough and there is - at least in my opinion - not only one model that should be in the collection...
but have a look and let me try to explain why....
The 088 - an all time classic.
I was keen on it quiet a long long time because of the great dial, the polished case with the polished CG and the fact that you can combine it with all kinds of straps...although it works better with the dressy ones, a fine leather or gator works perfect with it. What I love about the watch is the silver subdial for the small second...that is a true masterpiece of design...
Then we got the light weight...the 089
This watch is a stunner...I never liked titanium watches until I got this one into my hands. It is nearly impossible to capture the effects of this dial. It changes from light grey to darkest blue and almost everything in between depending on the light which shines on it. The dial even gets a different look with different shirts. thats truly amazing and you have to see this in person.
Grey or blue straps work with the 089 very well and the watch has a more sporty look than the 088.
Another thing what I have to mention is that I really underrated titanium as a material for watches...it is great and offers lots of strap varieties.
...and lots of watch opportunities as well![Wink ;) ;)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
then we´ve got the heavyweight - the 297
this watch or better the dial is kind of "tidy" ... black subdial for the small second and no minute index markers makes the 297 a bit colder in design and with the steel bracelet my impression is even more to this. The watch is very present on the wrist and due to its weight you feel it more than any other PAM I got in my collection. When you get in trouble in a bar or anywhere else this watch can save your life when you use it to knock your opponent down..the watch will survive for sure...
next up is the "bastard"...the 029B
You can not deny the history and partnership between Rolex and Panerai when you know something about the old school vintage PAMs and read all the interesting stuff about these times...anyway a couple of years later anyone put a Rolex Explorer and a Luminor in a dark room and something wonderful happened...a baby with a numbered bezel, a "big" second hand, a date loupe grown inside instead of outside, a wonderful good readable dial was the output. Very nice and with the tuxedo dial - wherever that came from - it is kind of unique. The dial is very interesting to look at as it changes the effect of the watch depending of the light that hits the dial...amazing watch.
what´s next? the special edition or tribute to the 29 A / B...the 029M
when you compare the 029M to the 029B you can clearly see what a small detail can do to the complete look of a watch. As there are no minute markers the watch is more present and has got this clear dial...on the other hand again the tuxedo dial which gives this model something special besides the big seconds hand...
lift your legs...
I know that there are plenty more of PAM GMTs out there and I am pretty sure that I´ll get some of these sometime. If you like to share your experiences with these or other GMTs feel free to chime in this thread!
Thanks for your interest and good luck with YOUR choice!
Always have a good time!
