GMT hand issue....

I bought a Clean Factory Pepsi V3 DD3285 M2M on another forum. Beautiful watch but the GMT hand doesn't funtion properly as compared with my other GMT reps. The hand "lags" behind the hour hand, so when I set the watch with the GMT hand two hours behind, it rotates more slowly so the differnce increases throught the day (I haven't had the patience to measure the difference). I had another rep serviced by a watchsmith recommended by an admin on this forum, and he said this is something he doesn't think he can fix. I have other GMTs I can wear when I travel so this bug isn't a huge deal but it is annoying. Thoughts?

Pick a time to measure your issue, like 10AM. Set the GMT hand to match the hour hand. In this example at 10AM the GMT hand would align with the dial's 5 o'clock hour marker. Wind the watch fully and wait until 10AM the next day. See where the GMT hand is.

If it isn't again aligned with the dial's 5 o'clock hour marker it's a gear issue or the hand could be loose on its wheel. The GMT hand could be catching or scraping on one or more hour markers and causing it to slip on the wheel and lag behind.

Would it be rotating 1/2 as slow as the hour hand by chance? :)
That's quite possible; if so, does it tell you something?

It was about 10 am when I first set it, and at 10 am today it seems to be back at the MDT time (2 hours earlier than my EDT home time). The issue is that throughout the day it will be 5 or 6 hours behind. Again, I haven't had the patience to track it but it could be, as @soho-watch guessed, that it travels 12 hours over a 24 hour period.....

That is not normal behavior for a DD3285. If after 24 hours the two hands are at the same positions relative to each other, it would appear to be working properly.

You are using the numerals on the bezel insert to determine the time indicated by the GMT hand correct? I believe that is what @soho-watch was implying - that you could be mistaken in your assessment because the GMT hand DOES in fact rotate one complete revolution in TWICE the time (24 hours) that the hour hand does (12 hours). This is why the insert has a 24 hour time scale on it.

This is how a GMT should look at 10AM and 12PM EDT with a GMT hand offset (-2) to MDT

okay, that's helpful; seems I've been been using it wrong. my PAM Luminor GMT works differently, as does the Pepsi GMT cheapie I've had for a year. in each case, the GMT hand rotates at the same rate as the hour hand so it always points to the 12-hour time in the other time zone. thanks for the education!

The Panerai GMT is 12hr. The Pepsi GMT is 24hr (hint look at the bezel, the numbers represent the time zone the gmt hand is tracking)

Got it; so now at 8:28 (or so) EDT the GMT hand points to 06:00 MDT and will continue to show MDT in 24 hour time on the bezel.....
Yes. The GMT hand will never actually deviate from the minute hand, so actually the GMT hand is precisely 6:30am-ish, if that makes sense.

The newer Panerai have a 12 hour GMT hand, vs most other GMT watches have a separate hour counter for 24 hours (older ones like the 029, 088, etc had a 24 hour GMT hand as well). I'm glad you seem to have it sorted, and nothing is wrong with it!

thanks for this, and for the bare minimum sarcasm; the cheapie Pepsi I've had for a year got me accustomed to the 12-hour setup, which makes sense for a cheaper movement, now that I think about it....
12 is 10 (on the bezel!)

That's a beauty, BTW....

It does, and it's actually been a fun learning curve. My daughter has a nursing background and used military time so it's entirely appropriate for her Denver time zone, whether I'm home or there.

You and me both!! Next I post about my issues with the PAM! Thanks again all......

Glad it's sorted out! (0% sarcasm)
