Hello chaps. I'm looking to buy my dad a watch for his 60th b'day. I'm afraid it has to be a gen. He would be seriously offended if I bought him a 'knock-off' replica. I promised myself not to buy a gen ever again after joining here and discovering the quality of the reps available these days but on this occasion it has to be a gen.

My budget is around £3000 ($5000usd).

He's prefers steel bracelets (not leather).

Ps. The watch has to be brand new (he'll also be offended if I got him a second hand item).

Any ideas/recommendations?
Thanks

Geez mate that's pretty open ended, what style of watch does your dad like? Dress, divers, aviation, chronograph etc. Give us a starting point mate.

You have quite a lot of choice for £3,000, it all depends on what type of watches he wears, i.e. size, type etc.

And it sounds like you know a lot about your dad. Then you also need to enlighten us about his brand preferences. $5000 can get you cheapest submariner no-date or maybe Aqua Terra Co-axial, or even the high-end grand seiko.

Speaking of Grand Seiko, it's a really good low profile watch. Others won't think its 3-4 grand watch. Humble people's best choice.

Ok sorry it was a bit open ended but I'm crap at buying presents. I've only seen him wear steel watches hence assumed he likes steel. He has quite a large wrist and I suspect something big, bulky and flash that looks like it's worth a lot would be better than subtle classy in this case. He doesn't know much about brands either but I expect he would say "wft?!! You paid 3k for a seiko". A huge Sea dweller would look good on his wrist or a planet ocean but they are out of my budget.

He would love something like this. The guy literally knows nothing about style.... so big, chunky, flash, bling is the way to go with him. I know he use to have an old Rado he liked but not sure if the new ceramic ones are appropriate for 60year olds?

You could look at something like the Tudor Pelagos, which should fit the bill, they seem to go for about £2,400 in the UK at the moment, although they are not officially sold here, a number of watch retailers in the UK have them for sale.

Breitling Superocean Chronograph. This is a 44, I think. Current offering is either 42 or 46. You can dress it up or down.

The chrono version is a bit too expensive but the non chrono super ocean heritage seems to tick all the boxes. Might just pull the trigger after work on Friday.

I don't think you will have any problem finding a very nice watch in that price range.

Thanks guys. Went to see a few watches in person yesterday and have decided on the breitling super ocean heritage. I'm picking it up next week and will post pics.

I would go with a an Omega Seamaster Pro chrono (blue) or a tudor if they are available where you live.
