Funny story from the watch shop...

I have a really great watch guy... I have had him service many GENS and had showed him my collection before I sold it, but this was the first time I brought in a rep - an IWC 3717 - and I was actually kind of nervous. It is a family run store and they are really nice and funny, but it is pretty far, about a 30 minute drive.

I went there to have the bracelet changed out to a leather strap. The cheap tool I had was not cutting it, and I ended up thrashing the pins so I left it to the professionals. I showed it to the mom of the family and she frowned and said in a thick accent, "You know, dis will ruin de watch. It will not be pretty."

I was like, "HUH?"

She said, "You have beautiful watch. Why you want to put dis strap on there? I just being honest with my customers, it will not be pretty."

Then the wife of the main guy looked and was like, "Hmmm... this is a nice watch, I don't know... you see, the end links are molded in the shape of the case, so it might not look right..."

Then the main guy came out. He was like, "Hmmmm... I don't think it will look that great but let me do one side." Then he put on one side and showed it to me. "The gap is pretty huge...see? you don't like the bracelet? It is a beautiful bracelet, it really makes the watch... why don't you like it?"

LOL so I was like, "Uh, I guess you're right." Defeated, I left the store.

I found it quite amusing that an entire family of people were hating on the leather strap for the IWC and felt like somehow I missed something... does anyone have pics of their IWC on black leather? I recently saw a gen IWC and after seeing it, my rep bracelet just looks cheap to me, but maybe I am imagining things...

I think he was referring to the "first" time he brought in a rep for service.

Edited! gens.. I love the watch. Would like to change the date wheel but then there's that whole zero tools and utter laziness problem

Did you have to drive a 7 Series BMW to the shop so they would work on it?

Yuck! They were right. Curved end strap is a must, but finding one could be a challenge. Not a lot of choices, especially for people like me with big wrists.

I prefer a nice leather strap to the rep bracelet. The steel 3717 bracelet looks dull and cheap compared to the gen, I've had both in my hands to compare.

I think the leather strap looks better but it's surely a question of taste. Some prefer bracelets, some leather or rubber straps - I like straps...
