Yeah that is understandable. Yet a good sign for his high quality work. I'd love to build myself a watch in the meantime. Do you have any idea where he and the other builders source their parts? For being a community forum, no one is very open about where they source their parts.

i usually source my gen/rep parts from the trade area in this forum lol

i have no idea where does mymanmatt source his parts, but I am strongly inclined to think that he orders in big quantities and therefore, he has a huge supply of gen and rep parts. I am guessing that even if you could get mymanmatt's sources, then there might be a minimum order quantity (MOQ).

alternatively ask some of the trusted dealers? because they got sources from factory.

by the way if you are going to DIY and make a franken watch, i recommend you to order a replica 16234 datejust and franken it from there (e.g. adding genuine dial, genuine crown, etc). This is because it will provide you with the existing and necessary parts to build a watch.

Also, the classic datejust models (e.g. 16200, 16233, 16234) used to be quite common and advertised on TD sites many years ago, but now you have to ask TD if they got them in stock because they are outdated (relative to modern rolex model e.g. 116234, 116200, 116300 etc)

Okay, thanks. Yeah I originally planned to Franken a 162xx from rep, but I have reached out to a lot of the TDs and none of them have any 162xx in stock. Guess it looks like I'm not going to be able to proceed with the build. Thanks for your help and replies.

I'd say wait out and keep an eye in the watch parts section. There is a complete kit for sale from Europe but it's more of a 16014 build. StoneP also builds and sells watches almost monthly.

zman1237 Look in the parts section. There have been a few DJ "kits" with everything needed. Gen and rep parts. bill33 just messaged me about a very nice 162xx package.

Thanks, yeah I have been talking with bill33 as well. He hasn't mentioned a 162xx package though, only 16000 packages. I'll double check.

You have been given a lot of information here. Go back a read it again. JMB for the case and bracelet. EBay for a dial and Tudor hands. You'll need a movement ring; rafflestime.com can furnish that and other things. Crown from eBay. Just search for date just 16200 crown (and tube). I will agree with the other posters; if you do not have a 4-power loop, set of watchmaking tweezers, watchmaking screwdrivers, a crystal press and other things, you can't have the degree of success that you are looking for.

Yes, definitely a lot of good information here and I'm very close to starting the build (which I will create a thread on). I appreciate all the help.

One question I did have regarding the movement ring. On rafflestime, there is a "movement ring for the 2836 or #1" and there is a "movement ring for #2". They have slightly different dimensions. I have read most people use the #2, but why doesn't the #1 that states its for a 2836 work??

You'll need a #1 if you are using a rep case. The number 2 would be for gen 16000 case. Pretty sure off that. I built these two watches some years ago and I thing that I used # 2 rings.

Thanks. I'll probably just buy both to be sure. Beautiful watches! Do you have a build thread on them?

Also, can anyone give general figures on how much one should spend on the gen parts? Case, crown, dial, Tudor hands, bezel, etc.

I built this 16200 DJ just this year, and I can tell you that it takes some doing. It is a JMB case, MyManMatt bracelet, hands, DWO, dial from eBay, crystal from Clark on eBay. Bezel is gen from eBay. Crown and tube are gen from eBay. Movement is a Swiss-made ETA 2824-2. Had to drill and retap the case for the gen tube. I think I have about $900 bucks in it. That's what happens to you. $1000 for a fake watch...go figure!

The advice to buy a junker and play with it is good advice. I have been doing this since 09 and can tell you that I have destroyed about as much stuff as I have completed. Make one slip and you destroy the balance. Blink your eye and bend the sweep second hand. Take your time...you'll get it.

BTW, Matt has a lot of parts both gen and rep. He is a great source and a true gentleman.
