My buddy says he has a gen rolex (an insurance settlement present to himself)
I am a total noob so he could be lying, how would I know?

It has a sweeping second hand, i noticed that.

He said he never needs to wind it. It winds itself through normal movement of the wrist throughout the day.

Is there a rep or movement that does that?

Short answer is yes. Now ask yourself; are you interested in watches or in catching your friend lying?

Nailed by TNAC

Yes, replica's sweep, Yes replica's are good WAY good. You would have to spend a bunch of hours here to be able to call him out....which never really happens anyway..it's the stigma of wearing a FAKE...which is ignorant IMHO....

No, no, people got the wrong impression, or I gave the wrong impression.
I could care less about his. I just brought it up because it is the only rolex I have ever seen. and therefor is my complete knowledge of the brand.

I am looking for a simple rep for myself.

I like the looks of the date just in silver. They look old, like a grandpa might have handed it down.

So does the 2813 21J second hand sweep and never need to be wound?
do they have a battery? or are they a very similar, though maybe not identical movement.

(complete noob remember)

The reps work with your wrist motion just like the real deal. They also sweep. The 21J will not sweep as smoothly as the real deal, but it does sweep.

Read. All of these questions are answered here. There are some great threads on rolex reps and movements so you can get what you want the first time.

Lets talk never needing wound...sweep okay
The movement of a Rolex as well as 100's of others is a mechanical movement...gears and jewels,,,wire springs....most older and some newer mechanicals are MANUAL WIND..meaning need wound daily...the others are AUTOMATIC WINDING...there is a 1/2 moon shaped doohicky called a "autowind rotor". It spins to and fro with the inertia made by your arms movements, hence, as it rocks to and fro it automatically winds the watch. Hyothetically never needing to wind it. Most automatics have 30hrs of power reserve after u stop moving the watch and let it wind down.
The modern Rolex's mechanical movment virbates 10x a second vs. one TICK per second of a battery quartz. So, the 10x per second gives the impression of a smooth sweep or 28,800 vibrations per hour. The 21j u mentioned beats 8x a second or 21,600 beats per minute...to a layman you would never know the differance. There litterally 100's of watches all over everywhere that use or have a manual or automatic mechanical engine.

That make sense?

Hey, Stradivarius, you've been in coma for 9 months? Why don't you spend a week in reading?

Thanks for the info, those who shared.

I have other non-watch hobbies and mod on a couple message boards in reference to those hobbies so I do appreciate those of you that have probably answered the same questions 1000 times and choose to do it yet again.

I am still reading
