Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew what kind of salary or per hour wage salespeople from fine watch retailers (like Tourneau, Leo Hamil, etc) earn? Like entry and senior salespersons? I suppose its the same as jewelers? I was just curious.

tourneau can't be much because the random sales people I have run into (NYC 5th ave store) are brain dead fools.

99% of the random CEOs of various companies I've run into are brain dead idiots and they get up to seven digit (before the decimal point) figure salaries.

I don't know whether you have similar websites but this one says between 20.000 and 40.000 Euros (multiply by 1.4 for USD).

random stats are random.

I asked the sale lady to show me a used Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, acrylic crystal (model 3570.50). I own the gen, but was wondering what the price they were selling it for.
As she takes it out, she says "it even has the sapphire crystal". I tap the crystal and it show her, nope, it's acrylic. I ask her how much. She looks at the little tag and reads to me "$3570.50."

When I said minimum wage, I meant that plus commission.

I don't know omega model numbers, but you should have found a nice watch with a very low model number, like 1234.00 that is actually more expensive!! :)

I work at Tourneau Time Machine in NYC. . . The money isnt great around 65-70k a year if your a good salesman and work with the expensive brands. I have worked at other places and I can tell you if you work for a brand boutique, which I have in the past its closer to 85-130k per year. . .

Tourneau is a pretty horrible place to work, just my 2cents. . .

No overtime, 55-60 hours per week, management could give a shit about customer service its all about closing the sale. . . STEER WELL CLEAR OF TOURNEAU. . . Don't make the mistake I made, stick to working at a brand boutique if you want to go the retail route. . .

I'd say that's a decent salary for retail sales in a non management position. 85 - 130K is very good money for most. Maybe that's "just OK" for NYC or SoCal areas, but for the majority of the country, not bad. My wife doesn't earn $85k as an RN with two masters degrees, and averages 50 - 55 hrs a week.

Yeah GH, that's what he's saying. that's not a Tourneau wage, it's what you earn at a good store. The Tourneau guys are doing 65-70 for a looooong week.

:D That´s hilarious.

Nevertheless you have to admit that you are an annoying customer. You can even distinguish a sapphire crystal from an acrylic crystal. Customers should not be able to do that - it's just confuses all the clueless sales ladies.

I would think that they would want to properly train their sales people. I constantly have to remind the ladies I deal with at my local
AD that SA's use 24mm straps.any times I have called and drive down to pick something up , only to find that they set aside the wrong size. I've actually educated them on what they sell. She pointed out a "new" Montbrillant a few weeks ago. I told her that it was discontinued. She said " oh, that's why it's on sale ".

Remember. They are just honest folks trying to make an honest living. I am really not into putting them down. My beef is with the companies that run the stores. They do very little training and education. If you go into the smaller boutiques, you will find folks that have been working there for many years , and are mote educated.

Cars. Watches. Firearms. Computers. It doesn't matter what the item being sold happens to be. There will always be "expert" consumers who will know more about the salespeople selling the product.

Why?

Because most buyers don't care, and achieving the ranks of the the top earners among sales people does not require extensive "technical" knowledge. Technical knowledge is only rarely more valuable than sales skill, and I would submit that none of the people criticizing slaes people for lack of knowledge would pay a significant premium to deal with a sales person who can recite every detail about every watch he sells.

There is a saying in the technology business. Those who know "how" always work for those who "why". Those who know "why" almost always earn more than those who know "how".

I am a "how and why" guy, and I have to constantly check the tech side of my brain at the door to advance in my career. LOL.

So give the poor slobs hawking watches a break. Enjoy your superior knowledge and hope they are courteous and friendly. Need a technical question answered? That's what Google is for.

Yes Patmian. I grew up in NYC, and my Dad frequented a shop for years, with folks who were knowledgeable and courteous. There is an AD here in San Diego, which has a gentleman with whom I have purchased 2 watches from. His knowledge about Rolexes is mind boggling. The history and detail of each model, etc. He personally owns close to a dozen. So I assume he isn't making minimum wage.

Those are the two sides of the coin.

Adding something from BMW's side of the fence, I fully expect people to take passion in their work. If they don't, I won't buy from them. If they seem disinterested, I move on. I could easily make a phone call at anytime and have a watch overnighted to me, but sometimes I like to be awed and have some fun haggling at the AD.

That applies to more than watches also.
