has anyone upgraded the 2836 GMT to a swiss 2893 GMT? I want to upgrade, but not sure it will work. Thanks for the advice.

What watch in particular. It can be done but in most cases you'll have to swap out all the wheels for taller pinion set.

The linked article mentions this in passing:
One case in point, several years ago a fair number of folks wanted to substiture an ETA 2893-2 GMT movement into the Rolex GMT IIc, which uses a modified 2836. a few folks tried the swap, a couple of people were able to do it, but it took a lot of different parts and some serious compromises, enough trouble that most people gave up on the idea.

However, I would like to put a different spin on this question. . .
:derailed:

How hard would it be to replace a 2824-2 with a a 2836 GMT, such as this one?

I want a small four hand watch and no one makes one at an affordable price; I mean no one, not homage, gen, or rep.

I have been looking at this one:

from here

With these specs:

  • Dimension: 35mm x 42mm x 9mm
  • Movement: Swiss ETA-2824-2 Automatic movement
. .. and thinking about how hard it would be to put a GMT movement into it. . .

any thoughts?

Next to impossible since the 2824-2 is a thinner movement and using a 2836-2 with the GMT module would give you no room to finagle it in with different shims or dial spacers. The GMT module adds to the thickness and the space needed.

On the other hand you might be able to put a 2893-2 GMT into that case but the cost might not be within your budget and the only way to find out is to buy one and try it.

Thanks, this all keeps pointing back to Ofrei's case #1. It just seems strange to me that with the thousands of watches on the market, no one makes what I want, and I don't think I am being that picky.

I bought a new Hamilton GMT with Swiss ETA a couple of years ago on sale for around $400. Now that's the cost of the movement.

I bought a Super Franken Rolex GMT IIC. I got such a great price I was interested in upgrading the movement. I honestly am considering a 3186, but that is probably just a dream.
