I'll repeat what I alwaus say. In 20+ years I have never been asked about the watch I was wearing. Why? Because if you look like you should be wearing the watch in question no one will ask.

Since I've been out of work I have really enjoyed being a T-shirt and jeans guy again. Granted, my beater Breitling for Bentley looks a little (okay, a lot) blingy with clothes like this but I really couldn't care less.

Do people draw conclusions about me because of this? I highly doubt it, simply because no one cares enough to see what I have on my wrist.

This is an interesting topic. A friend of mine for the last few years noticed my gen Breitling on a croc strap and almost immediately asked if it was fake. And he really didn't believe me when I said it was real. He'd had a run of good business luck and had a Navi , a Rollie Sub, and a couple other nice watches, all gens, but had since fallen on hard times. Knowing he likes watches, I tried to turn him on to the "dark side" as some here call it, but he refuses to even consider a replica, although now he can't afford hardly anything.

Some people's self worth is in their possessions. It's sad actually. My wife doesn't mind reps either. Years ago I got her some nice cubic zirconia studs (who wants to blow money on diamonds when there are nice watches to buy). She wore them to work one day and her coworker assumed they were real. The following week the coworker showed her the larger authentic diamonds (allegedly) that her husband had bought her--they had just taken an equity loan out on their house, lol. My wife never said a word.

So I ask this. Is it wrong to be, let's be honest, a poser, when the only damage it does is to those who are obsessively materialistic to begin with, lol?

Nobody's ever asked me, but if they did, I assume they knew more about watches that the average adult. I imagine that I'd hand/show the watch to them and say, "What do you think about this one?" I'd let them respond and then tell them the truth.

I normally wear a "real" watch in potentially sensitive professional situations. They amount to half of my collection.

I think it's a matter of how well you project yourself not the watch. If you're skiddish about your watch it will show in your body language. I own a gen LV that I've been called out for once or twice on, not because they *know* watches but because they didn't think I was old enough to own one. I got defensive and even let them look at it for themselves. After that they quickly changed their minds. NOT because they took a look at it and realized it was real but because of my actions/reactions. I've done the same with a rep before as well.

I've only been asked about Rollies (by friends), no one else has asked about any of my other watches.

I guess we could also just tell them to back off because we know Mui Tai and we'll run over them with our Lambo kit car. :arghh:

Hmm many of my coworkers have become annoying after finding out that I own more than one watch. So.... the lesson I learned is just don't bring it up at all. But no, I don't try to pass off my reps as gen at work. If they ask, I am honest. The next job I get, I'm just going to keep my hobby to myself.

I agree with what most of you guys are saying... but I don't buy into the "look the part" story. Just the other week I met this guy who was wearing an old t-shirt, jeans and boots... and a stunning genuine gold Corum Golden Bridge... :notworthy: We talked about his collection and he told me this was one of his favourite pieces... Actually, now that I think of it, most people I know who wear fabulous watches don't wear fancy clothes at all. My opinion: just wear what you like. That nice fuzzy feeling when you look down at your wrist is all for yourself, not the one in a million people out there who gives a toss. That my $0.02.

Now that Roo, is EXACTLY why I wear watches.

And Corum Golden Bridge - man I love that watch; he must've been some lucky guy!

I have never been asked and that could be because I started wearing reps (so far only two) after I joined RWI which is very recent. I guess the question comes from two different set of individuals, 1) Curious and/or 2) Non-believers. A curious person will compliment and praise while non-believer will taunt or pass an ugly remark.

Would you aska woman you just met if her boobs are real?
Maybe .....depends on the beverage of the evening.
I guess I like living withong my means. What I mean is there are some sick gens out there for alot of money, more than what I make in a year. I mean $200k watch is obscene! But I do like some of them but would I wear them, yes if I really liked how it looked and I was not going to embarass myself somewhere.
I have started replacing reps with gens over a year ago and have not really looked back. I do have mt rep PAm but it is a damn good rep and want to wear a rep tjhat I wont be called out on. I work with pilots...Breitling owners mostly. Most of us can afford a Breitling and wear them proudly. Its fairly uncommon to see a casio or Timex on on eof our guys.
There are a few that just wear a watch becasue they "need to". I wear one becaue i love to, and since I need it Ill wear one that I will appreciate. Fakey has it right. (as usual) 99.999% could care less the others might and assume what they will. I think it really depends on the first impression. Its up to you if you care or not. I would rather be held in higher regard than lower. I would rather it be assumes its"real" over fake. Im not kidding myself if I wear a rep , i know what it is and the chance I take when i wear it. with a gen..the chance is removed. No anxiety and even if my gen is called a rep, its still a gen, and the jokes on them.
Its a topic that appears every now and again. If you like it wear it but understand the rules:
NEVER take a rep to an AD
NEVER take a rep into water(unles its tested)
ALWAYS buy the best you can afford and mod it if you can.

I agree wth that for sure. The goal of the ooooverwhelming majority of people coming in is to present an image..not the love of horology. They have no idea how watches work and don't care. They just want to know if their boss will think it's real. But what they don't seem to get is it really comes down to projection not presentation.

Example. When I put on a watch and walk out the door, I have done nothing more than put on a watch and walk out the door. I don't think about it again after that meaning I act like a normal person. I don't check the time unless I need to and if there's a clock on the wall I will look at that first. I don't make it a point to give everyone on the elevator a nice wrist shot. And I don't hand it around at parties. I just don't think about it anymore than I think about my pants. Hell when you're wearing a shirt no one can even see it unless it is some 50mm clown watch that won't fit under the cuff. I assure you if they notice they are thinking how stupid it looks not what brand it is. And I can tell you this as well. If you project yourself that way no one will ask. And if the odd situation comes up where the watch is discussed they will believe it is real. Why? Because YOU are wearing it. To quote myself. The watch does not make the man, the man makes the watch. You may agree or disagree with this view. But as I have said many times I've been wearing reps for 20 years and have never once been asked about my watch. I do not believe that is a coincidence.

I bet a lot of people would admire your well made replica even they know it`s not genuine, especially when it`s waterproofed, robust (saphir-crystal), accurate, and reliable, because they just don´t know that there even exists a huge internet-market for replicas, where you can choose and buy your favourite piece. And what`s much more important, that there is this so helpful forum (Replica-watch.info), where you get so much information about watches generell, and a list of trusted dealers, without it i would not dare to make a purchase.
More respect for someone who shows interest, pleasure and respect for his replica-watch than any other person who wears his genuine rolex just for pomposity and don`t even know if there is a battery-quartz-driven movement or a mechanical one in it.
My experiences...

As far as people who know me goes... the vast majority know I'd never spend more than ~$300-400 for a watch :) -so that part's solved.

As far as strangers goes... I'd gauge the person and either make a joke of it "Of course it's a fake" or go with "Of course it's real" or "I don't remember," using the same deadpan I use in poker when asked if I had a hand.

No one asks unless you give them a reason to.

My friends know but they also know how much money I have. My clients dont know but if they ask, ill admit it's fake. I'd rather be seen a person who has boundaries and can save money for important purchases than be a guy who can't afford to make a house/car/loanshark payment but pretend to have a gen!

The people who have asked have been told it's fake, then they ask where I got such a wicked awesome replica. I tell them...the magic land of china!

I've only been asked once "what watch is this?" and told the guy it was a high end rep.
I don't think I could tell people a rep is a gen unless I own the gen.
