Go try on a gen pam.. I imagine you'll be unimpressed after having a good rep. At least I was.

Some watches just can't be beat in gen form.. PAM in my opinion isn't one of them

It depends on how anal you are.

I personally find a modded noob v3 111n not accurate enough (...lol I know I know)

I just sold my gen 000 for $3.5K and never looked back. I've still got my gen 048 that's been a keeper until there's a super rep of this one but I doubt that. If I ever buy another gen then it must have "in house" movement otherwise no point.

Having only been into gens until recently (Not Panerai's) I am really impressed by the reps I have seen so far. I have been in and compared my 061 copy to a gen 177 (glass and case) and I have a Nob 177 on order. The only area that jarr's is the glass, hoping the Noob will be better and I will try and fit a gen glass to my 061.

I would now only buy a non rep-able gen, and try and only buy a rep that looks gen enough for 99%. I have tried numerous Gen Pan's on and have no desire to buy one, just improve the glass on my 061 copy and spend my money on other things. I may buy a gen JLC reverso.

I love the Original Rolex Daytona but I'd never buy one, £20k for something that is very repp'd ?!

Some watches are difficult to rep, Patek's, JLC, Brequet, etc. Some are much more easily Repp'd AP, Pan, Rolex etc. The answer for me is there and more importantly the reasons why.

What stands out as the major differences? Is it the overall feel or can you tell a significant difference in fit and finish?

I just feel that the construction of the watch and the feel is very superior..well even the strap was high quality..but then again it was my first gen, so maybe I may have overreacted a lil..lol..but overall, I'm still glad with the purchase.

My grail watch is the 177, I started to buy Marine Militare 7-8 years ago, 95% of the population didn't know the brand and wouldn't make the difference.
I had 10 different reps of the 177 and for now almost 3 years (40th b-day) I have the gen, it gets 90% of my wrist time.
It's not what the people think that important, it's how you feel.
I got burglarized and out off the 33 watches I owned only my gen got covered by insurance (I couldn't declare my rep stolen to the police, and insurance cover what is declared stolen on the police report)
At the end 10000€ of watch vanished....
I bought another 177 with the insurance money, and for those that tell you it's not worth the money, I'll respond that I could probably sell it a higher price that I bought it for, if not now definitely in a few years with the rise of the cost of gen.
So clearly worth every single penny....

Interesting point on the Insurance. It's also how it makes you feel, I still love my IWC and even though it's 2-3 time the cost of a good rep to service it's still with me.

PS how good was the best rep vs your gen 177, it's a watch I favour too

If your lucky

I have both a Pam 25 and 111 Gen
I have a Pam 359 and 256 Rep and love them all

There is something about owning the Gen with the box and documentation that I can't describe but just feels right

I have a modded AP diver and Hublot rep that I wouldn't buy Gen so it allows me to have a varied cross section of watches I wouldn't be able to afford (even if my wife allowed it) using the mix and match approach

Right now 4 Reps and 10 Gens

I'm a lucky guy

Here's what I would do and have done. Get a super rep. Upgrade the movement with an ETA unitas/7750/7753, water proof it and lume if necessary. You now have a reliable watch that will last for decades and can be serviced by any watchsmith. With the rest of your money get a used gen Omega, Breitling etc...
Having said that, I was also in the same position as you with the same amount of funds and I decided to wait and save some more and eventually got a used gen pam88.
Bottom line though, buy the gen you can afford and want and buy the best rep of the gen you can't afford but want and mod the heck out of it so that it's as reliable as the gen.

This is an answer very difficult and with a lot of nuances and subjective part.
Better doing some thinking over this matter:

Are the Suoer reps at more 90% of the gen: YES
Will a rep 99% accurate (imposible 100%) to the gen be the same as gen?: NOT AT ALL
Will the reps keep its value in the future ?: Few of them, and not even increase usually
Will the gen PAM keep its value in the future?: Usually yes and with important increases many times.
It is the same feel wearing a rep or a gen? : USUALLY NOT AT ALL. But this is UP TO YOU.
It is worth top buy a PAM. Manifattura type or similar impossible to be replicated ?: If you have the money YES, YES, YES. If you have no money: Why are you torturing yourself with no necessity?
It is worth top buy a PAM easy to be replicated ?: This is the problem. Start again reading these questions….

Anyway, A rep will never have the charge of charism, care and love for manufacture of a gen. You will pay for that, of course. But you will never be obligated.
I think you are more confused than at the beginning…

As I sit here with a gen IWC doppel on my wrist and look at the strap I bought last year for £200+ I will be looking for a very good rep strap next time.....

I have several interests to divide my money up. I have a gen dress watch, which I love, and a few others like Glycine and Helson before I found the rep world. At the time I bought those watches, I really couldn't make myself afford a $5k watch, because we had other things like house/career to work on.

Now that I am more settled....I don't need any new suits, I don't need any more guitars or stereo gear, I have a couple cool fountain pens...stuff that I enjoy...we have a cool place to live and some art that speaks to us. So if a big deal comes in, I may go buy a gen, but at that point I don't really care that much anymore...I get a lot of satisfaction collecting what I call "counterfeits". I don't think a real Omega is going to make that much of a difference over my super-UPO.

I would take a few steps back, away from the computer and fantasy and think about what makes you happy and keep some balance here. Life is short.

Did you just say that?

Better hope she doesn't find out you even thought of that.

Wow ALE interesting, a few from home, a quite different approach for me with old school naim in the cine room and low power valve n vinyl and horns in another room. I did have a KSA 50 in the past, but those are monstrous !
