Just a few thousand miles, at a guess. :D

Firstly, where on earth are you seeing Japanese movements advertised? None of out trusted dealers sell them.

Well, to be honest, that depends on the japanese and chinese movements in question. A chinese 2824-clone will be better than a crappy miyota bulk movement.

The reason I'm being cagey is that the usual people to discuss chinese and japanese movements in competition are the scamming replica sites, like bluefakes and replicahaus.

Japanese movements, by and large, are better than the usual movements sold in cheap fakes, but they're significantly more expensive wholesale and are not worth the extra to a replica maker. Also, don't judge a replica by its movement alone. I'll take an Asian movement over Swiss if the Asian has AR Sapphire and the Swiss has Mineral Glass ...

So mainly what I should be looking for is the Swiss with the Saphire, but then the Japanese with the Saphire crystal to save a few bucks. Sound about right? Sounds to me to stay away from the Chinese, am I understandin ya?

No, you're vastly over-simplifying everything. :D

Sorry, but it's just not that easy. If you're after a specific watch, get the best you can inside your budget.

What are you looking for and what is your budget? At a guess, and this is a pure guess, I can answer the question before you ask it and suggest reading this:

Please correct me if I'm wrong. There are a lot of helpful people here.

Stay away from websites in general, unless they're from one of our reputable dealers listed on the home page of Dark side...And there's no such thing as Italian replicas either, right guys and gals?

And anyone claiming to put Zenith movements in their watches is a liar. :D

If you mean difference in cost and reliability the Miyota 8215 is costlier than the Chinese automatics but don't base it just on price. The Chinese auto's seem to be very reliable although I did have my first one die a few days ago. But expecting a DG2813 in the mail tomorrow hoping it will fit. For the money I would go with a good Chinese movement besides I've never even seen a Jap auto in any of our reps.

bryand, stick to the dealers here ONLY, and you'll be far better off. You'll learn quickly that the three prominent movements are Swiss, Asian with Swiss parts, and All-Asian; and here, Asian basically means Chinese. Miyota/Japanese mov's are expensive wholesale, and if one would spend that much, they'd go with Swiss movements anyway.

I'd stick to Swiss if I were you. I personally just avoid any fancy movements with chronos, etc. on reps; rule of thumb is that more gizmos, more potential problems... why take the risk when there is no 2 year international warranty? That's just my opinion.

I usually stick to the basics like ETA2834/2836's with no engraved logos and ETA6497 only, as they're good workhorses and readily repaired if necessary. The Asian7750 with high BR is suppose to be good, but I stick with the basics.

A lot of the new Asian/Chinese movements are great, but for an extra 50~80 bucks, I know I have less worries for a longer period of time, i.e., 2~3 more years. Then again, one may say that in the rep business, 2~3 years bring VAST improvements on the timepieces, which means that you may not even want your watch for over 3 years; just get a new one... if that's the case, Asian will be sufficient. I do have to admit, that I don't even wear my gen watches after 3 years or so... I got Concords, Movados, etc. just collecting dust.

Bottom line I think is, just get what looks good that keeps time within 20 seconds per day, and you should be fine.
