Chat - how does it work?

Been seeing some numbers by the chat icon but when I hit it the page is blank.. not sure if missed some messages. Since clicking the chat icon those numbers have now disappeared.

I disnt mistake this from messages, the envelope icon.

This would be the chat next to search and the chat in the menu. I could've sworn both had diff numbers too.. aren't they supposed to be the same?

Don't bother, that number is not referred to you in any way, it only displays the amount of members currently involved in the chat box.
