Anyone tried this on their polished parts of their timepieces? I made a mistake and burried my 126610LN about 1/5th way into sand and now it got a lot of scratches on the left side of the timepiece. Didn't think it would scratch so dang easily.

Cape cod for polished parts, scothbrite for brushed.
Thanks Feefo, do you know if there are any alternatives that can be bought from Walmart or Target? Cape Cod can be found on Amazon but not Walmart or Target. Thanks again.

You can always use a felt or cotton head for your drill and a polishing compound. Many fix the cape cod on such a head btw.

So dumb of me, at least now I know that even pebbles of sand can scratch the steel.

I've never heard of cape cod so good to know. Got before and after shots of the scratches?

Buy some good masking tape and tape off brushed areas!

Trust me, if you don't, you'll find out that Cape Cod works better than expected. I had to find out and learn the hard way (edge of a brushed area on a €7000 gen ruined 😅 - took some effort to restore 😖😆).

You betcha. Beside that painfull episode of a lesson, I have to say that I'm impressed with how effective Cape Cod is. Fixed a lot of polished parts on various watches so far... Saved probably a good amount of costs as well vs. bringing them to a watchmaker to be polished.

You just have to prepare everything correctly and know what you're doing and not think you can just work on something spontaneously without the right preparation. 😜

I did the same on my Zenith Chronomaster sport! Took ages to get it back to how it’s supposed to be…. Taping off brushed areas is essential!

That's a well over 10K watch!

The good thing is that you can restore f'ed up brushed areas many times over until it's too much vs over polished areas which happens IMO faster (once you have e.g. rounded edges, it's very hard to restore if not in fact impossible).

Cape cod for polished parts, scothbrite for brushed.

The stuff from the kitchen is sufficient for quick and dirty stuff (on shitters or just a clasp).

But if you want (almost) professional level brushing without having to buy expensive machinery, I can only recommend Garryflex abrasive blocks. Those are essential spongy blocks that come in 7 or 8 different strenghts. The stuff is absolutely great and in my opinion, it's the "Cape Cod of Brushing".

Watchmakers use Garryflex for smaller jobs and the reason why I no longer use Scotbrites is that different brands have different degrees of brushing. Some Omega bracelets, for example, have a more coarse brushing than Rolex and the different Garryflex blocks covers most of them.

Ahh I’ve not heard of those, thanks for sharing. Until now I’ve used 3m pads, I imagine they’re similar; ultra fine is great for most watches but superfine is best for some also, depends on the finish as you say:

As long as they are explicitly for metal works, I bet they're just as good.
