Can an AD spot a rep at first sight?

I bought a 111h and put a crazy horse strap on it. My questions is what are some of the tell tales of why an AD would be able to spot that my watch is a rep without taking it off?

I enjoy going in to watch stores like Torneau and Bailey Banks. I'm like a kid in a candy store. I've purchased many watches from both stores. I would be completely embarrassed if a store rep said "that's a fake".

Color of the steel, tint of the crystal, finish of the dial, ... If that's a watch they're used to see, they will spot it's a fake in a split second :)

So if I remove the AR, it will be closer to gen. As for the steel color, polished steel (chrome) looks the same to me.

the crown. I can spot a rep crown from a long distance

What's the difference?

will a gen crown fit a rep?

This is probably the principle reason that those who can afford it, engage the services of the Modding experts here at RWI to upgrade the visual appeal of their reps. It's a constant work in progress (let's take Panerai as one example: Toro CG, SL-48 Crown, Taka AR, Matte Dial, Superlume, etc), and at some point you need to say "I'm satisfied with how close my rep looks to a Gen and I've saved ten thousand dollars but I've poured about 500.00 into mods. It will look amazing but your chances with a professional dealer are still 50/50...

Very well said. The good thing with Panerai is that not alot of people own them, much less seen them but only behind glass at upscale watch shops. Even for a watch freak like me; the first pam I've ever tried on a pam was the rep I purchased.

The bluish tint on the crystal would be a dead giveaway. Other than that, definitely the crown...oh and cannon pin if they get close enough, lol

Why will you wear a rep into an AD?

Wearing a rep into an AD has been a no no for our hobby.

the rep crowns are skinny/thin.

a t-48 crown solves this usually, no need for a gen one.

oh, and the crown guard pin, man that's a pretty easy tell from about 10
feet away, so flattening it does a world of good.

Wait a minute, I paid $300 for a new crystal on a gen and it had a very obvious bluish tint on the sapphire crystal. Did I get taken?

Breitling tint is different from Pam tint Ect. Ads know what there brands look like.

10 feet away, eh???? Something that is 1mm in diameter, you can tell from 10 feet away. What are you some sort of bald eagle or something??? I bet you probably can't even tell the difference between a Jackson Tse homage and a Trusty rep.

awesome, thanks for the lol.

the ten feet thing isn't a literal measurement. it's more of statement
to say if you're really close and staring at the watch, you get the idea.

seeing how Jackson does sterile and MM, I think that might be actually
differentiated from ten feet away from a P LM or a P R or whatnot.

it basically comes down to this: consider ADs geeks. like us you know?
so them and us might be able to, if we even cared to begin with, but no
other person will know. not even with a poor ARed crystal.

Sometimes I pass in front of an AD wearing one of my reps and I want to go in anyway. For example, we don't have a Panerai AD where I live, so I feel pretty confortable walking in with one of my modded pams :)

For Gen Panerai, some series, like G series, have the AR blue tint on their crystal...
A franken or modded Panerai replica, its far from being straightforward to spot as a replica...
You must open it to find the true.

But still, I will never wear a rep in an AD store.

Hey, here is a great way to not only save yourself from being busted by the AD but to save our hobby bad press as well:

Don't wear your rep into an AD in the first place!!!!

FFS, what is it these days? Apart from being just plain bad manners you do our little hobby a dis-service by drawing attention to reps by doing that. Once was the time people were banned from here for that act. Please, use some common sense and just don't do it. Would you walk into the local cop shop smoking a joint, the butcher's wearing a "Meat is Murder" Tshirt or drive into the Ferrari dealership in a Pontiac based kit car?

TB, the answer to these questions might be "yes" by some people, I'm afraid.

It should still be a banning offense, although I've been in Tourneau's with a franken DJ several times. They make me nervous when they always want to give it a free cleaning and I don't want it out of my sight.

On the other hand, I don't think most of the their salesmen would be able to spot a decent rep 9 out 10 times. Most of the forum members know more about watches than they do.

But, wearing a rep Panerai into a Panerai Boutique would be a suicide mission.
