Very interesting point raised in the video about the hardness of the carbon steel used in rep movements. I understand why the screws aren't hardened (cost), but I'm unsure if rep movement wheel pivots are or are not hardened / tempered carbon steel. I'll need to think of a way to test this... I have a lot of spare parts from various movements, I guess I could try using a set of hardness testing files, but the size of the parts might make such a test quite hard (pardon the pun).Interesting comparison between a gen and 324 free sprung balance, especially the timings.
Would be interesting to get your take on the movement as a watchmaker @dogwood and seeing how much those timing numbers can improve with a service, it's all good for it to be a free sprung balance movement but not sure if it's worth it if the accuracy takes such a hit.Very interesting point raised in the video about the hardness of the carbon steel used in rep movements. Those timing numbers are due to poor poise (symmetry) of the balance wheel. When you adjust the rate of a free sprung balance movement, you need to adjust the weights symmetrically in pairs. If you don’t adjust the weights in pairs, you’ll mess up the balance’s poise. I kinda suspect that the watch in the video had somebody who didn’t know what they were doing try to regulate it. But we’ll see. I have a free sprung 240 Patek movement inbound for a project so I’ll test it once it’s here.Would be interesting to get your take on the movement as a watchmaker @dogwood and seeing how much those timing numbers can improve with a service, it's all good for it to be a free sprung balance movement but not sure if it's worth it if the accuracy takes such a hit.
I haven’t (yet). I’ll be sure to post if / when I get the opportunity.Have you worked on the ACE 324 movement, too? If so then what is your opinion?
Oh those are perfectly acceptable numbers for a rep. Did you get those results after regulating it or was it like this out of the box?
This was out of the box. I didn’t touch it —I let sleeping dogs lieOh those are perfectly acceptable numbers for a rep. Did you get those results after regulating it or was it like this out of the box?
