Not necessarily, quartz watches do sweep. Matter of fact they sweep smoother than mechanical ones

QQ is right and speaking to angus these do SWEEP and they sweep perfectly smoothly - only a spring drive can sweep smoother.

cool.....I never knew that--I always thought quartz meant ticking--so is there any drawback to a quartz movement over an automatic? Isn't the quartz more accurate too?

yes Seiko/Pusar have smooth sweep quartz BUT except for spring drive there is no perfectly smooth sweep on a watch.
