Getting To Know The Place

I was having this conversation with a friend of mine who is an orthodontist. He has a few gens - AP, Breguet, JLC, Panerai, etc. I was wearing my 111h and he asked me where I got it. I told him it was a rep and handed it to him. His response was "can I get the site you got this from?" No one will ever question what is on his wrist - or mine, for that matter. If I can save on a watch and use the money to buy more cars I'm ok with that. It's much easier to spot a rep car than a rep watch.

Several of my friends sport gen AP's . . . one has a gen JPM. Nobody ever says anything about mine other than "nice watch." However, I can easily pull off wearing a gen $75,000 watch anyway, so nobody thinks twice in my circle of friends. I never tell anyone that I wear reps. It never comes up. Even my buddy with a gen JPM thought my rep was real. What's the biggest "tell" for a rep AP watch . . .? It's not the date wheel proximity to the tachymeter ring or the thickness of the caseback . . . it's that you don't look like you can afford a $20K, $50K or $75K watch. That is the dead giveaway.

I dont look like I can pull of a 20k piece, yet I do...

I dont like to show off so imo the looks tell nothing. You should know how many people with a large bank account dont have the looks. More than you would imagine.

Actually your right. Some of my wealthiest customers come into my shop in flip flops and t shirts.

Guys do not be mistaken, we are not talking about the look per se, but about a certain subtle aura of capability that only comes with self esteem, confidence, elegance...

Exactly, 100% agree. It's just about an aura, demeanor, confidence that a person has . Some people wear whatever they wear, very casual with flip flops but there is still some aura about them .... on the other hand some people might wear expensive designer clothing or a formal suit and tie but still not have that certain demeanor about them. So it has little to do with the other material things they have on, just how they carry themselves .

No need for any guilt: the gen manufacturers are blood-sucking dandy cliques.

Absolutely. The only reason I think people should still buy the gens is so that gen makers can continue to finance designers to create beautiful new watches to be repped.
