Anyone got scans of an INGY 2824 datewheel? I've been thinking of making one for while now, since it uses an overlay on the eta datewheel already.

Shouldn't be too hard to make right?

well... i figure if you could make one, you could make them all.. the biggest issue is alignment.... i have had 3 lello's that didn't align correctly...

Not that I think it's necessary. But what does this guy make his datewheels out of?

it's a print on something (i don't know exactly what) but then it is put on an eta datewheel...

When I was emailing him a few months ago, I was under the impression that he was recycling the rep DWs

I've read several threads on the forums regarding datwheels with printed overlays over the original fonts. I've glued a noob sub overlay over a an ordinary eta datewheel with no problems using gs-hypo cement. So if it's a viable proposition that's been used before its worth a try. I was thinking of using the thinnest photo paper I can find and reducing the scanned image to the exact dimensions of the datewheel, the hardest part will be cutting the overlay correctly...

If you can pull this one off - congrats...and I will be ordering about 10 from you!! ;)

Yes, he is using old rep DW, then like I said, wash them off, repaint the background then print it.

On the ingenieur, it's an overlay too.

Cutting is not a big problem. There is a lot of "setting" place who can do that. I may go ahead with this project upon my return to Indonesia/Singapore. Just didn't have the time but I would say the problem is to find the DW itself. Not the printing or cutting of overlay. I have been looking to search for "blank" DWs... To date, no avail.

Just tried a tester on normal paper, 210 glossy photo paper too thick. Mental note to self 'must buy new x-acto blades' Any comments?

looks good :) But the texture of the background matters too. Normal paper won't do.

The print on the 210 photo paper was excellent but the paper was way too thick. Any ideas on what weight paper to use?

i have seen photo paper 130g. That will shave it to half... anyway, care to share the size on how to print? Thanks a lot.

I think you would need to think outside the box and get synthetic paper/plastic if your printing. Also, take to a local die-cutting shop that commercial printers use to see it they can make you a die to cut the disks. Basically you would need an arbor press for the tooling, then give the die cutter your OD and ID and then you can cut perfect datewheels.

Another approch to this, is to have a stamp maker supply you with a press and rubber stamp. The press and fixture can be expensive but the stamps are not. Then you apply ink and silkscreen on the orignal date disk. I think this is the best way. You will have to do as Takashi suggests; strip and repaint.

Hope that helps.

Reduce the scan to approx. 33% then adjust by trial and error...

I think R2D4's idea would give you the best results, however, (now this is just an idea)...
What about applying the text to the date wheel using something like Laser Decal Paper?
I've seen stuff for model airplanes at decalpaper.com. I haven't tried it yet, but it might work.

The overlay must be as thin as possible so as not to jam with the underside of the dial. The paper 'tester' overlay works fine but for a really gen effect I'm hoping the thinnest glossy photo paper will suffice. Believe it or not the hardest part up to now has been cutting out the overlay correctly!!! If I get the overlay idea to work I'll post a high res scan of the datewheel to scale and with the correct grey coloured font so that all members can simply print some off, if they wish, for free...

I agree... As for cutting, you can create a "die" of cutter to cut it exactly (in this printing shop). The machine looks like it just presses to the paper and it will be cut perfectly.

Ok I like your style! This is a very bold project and I applaud you for it. My advise on the cutting is to do as I mentioned above with a die maker. Another option is to contact a printing supply company who specializes in paper drills and have them make you a set for the sizes required. Post the sizes and I will look in my book to see if something is close. In addition, print registration lines on your waste paper (inside and out) like cross hairs to line up for cutting.

Maybe I am telling you something you already know, but maybe I am hepling.

Good luck!
