If we talk about HW PAM, then I would choose PAM001/002 with T dial. If L, then PAM116/118.

If you take automatics, there are a lot of very interesting options, like PAM093/PAM086/PAM091/PAM171 and many others, which, however, may be rarer and more expensive, not to mention the T dials A and B series PAM027/PAM028/PAM029/PAM023, depending on your relationship with the REP of these models.

Also, in my opinion, very good travel of T submersibles in a 44mm case, for example PAM025/PAM170/PAM106, maybe even PAM199. If the budget allows, then PAM087 D&E series, with an old dial that was not well repped.

If we talk about 47mm, then depending on the budget, it's hard to imagine something better than PAM202/PAM225/PAM194 as GEN.

Again, it's all down to personal preference, and I'm excluding models that are reproduced by rep factories in sufficient quality to make buying a gen a truly new and positive experience.

I would choose a 002 t dial but his title is bang for buck and the t dials can fetch a premium, whereas you can get a 112 for half the price of a 002

I agree, however, gen T is something I think you can pay for if you can.Even so, its appearance and character cannot be repeated, but with L, especially a sandwich, it's a little easier.
But this is a matter of taste and preference, of course.

I tried on a 914 the other day that looked very nice.

If DLC/PVD suits you, then PAM02121, judging by the photo from the boutique, on the net, looks great, although this one is not something that will be easy, fast and cheap to buy now.

I saw one on Instagram yesterday - they look phenomenal.

Unfortunately, there is no such design combination for the 8 days in this case, which is the uniqueness of the 632.

However, if you appreciate the tobacco dial, then with a titanium case and 8 days, it can be mint lume (sausage and sandwich) 562/564, or patina lume 797 with PR indicator on the dial.

Thanks for all your input!! You guys mentioned lots of watches that I wouldn't have considered.

So far I have the list narrowed down, listed below from least towards most favourite.

Not mentioned, but on my radar is the pam663.

Are there any 8 day 47mm Panerai out there?

Things that I like most:

1) sausage dial
2) no second hand
3) 8 days movement
4) stainless or titanium case
5) creamy lume and/or tobacco dial

Thoughts:

Perhaps worth the investment the pam001T for historical value?

T period - beautiful, but they are all mostly powered by eta7750's, and maybe a new 'in-house' movement is a better investment?

I love the pam087, but probably not the best option for first Panerai and general wearability.

And pam055, ugh, thats way too much cash for a 6497, am I right?! The dial is almost perfect though.

If I had my way I would get a 47mm pam390 with an in-house 8 day movement.

Maybe the pam372 is the next best option although it has the p.3000, or just go straight to a pam127.

The quest continues.... thanks again for all your input.

I'll try in order:
8 daytime 47mm pams exist, if we are talking only about luminors, then these are models with angelus: PAM203, PAM267, models with P.2002: PAM368, and a number of models with complications, based on P.2002, P.2006 and e.c: PAM656, PAM579, PAM319 and many others.
The conclusion is that the category is not small, interesting, but everything on the list is serious and not cheap models.

Does it make sense to invest in the historical value of the T dial?
In my opinion yes, these dials it only gets smaller over the years, no one will ever produce them again, and this is something that cannot be fully repeated by modern methods.

Regarding ETA models: Just look at today's PAM225 price to get an idea of how much a watch with a 7750 inside could cost today. Panerai, this is not about the cost of movemnt.

General daily usability is a personal matter; lifestyle, work, your physical dimensions, and so on. Just as some who spend most of their time in a suit believe that only a radiomir can be a daily panerai, so those who lead a more carefree lifestyle can wear some kind of subzilla on a Kevlar diving strap all year round.

Regarding the price of PAM055, yes, it's like its descendant with a transparent caseback PAM116 can be quite popular, and slightly more expensive for example than the close PAM010, with a less popular and sought-after color scheme, but speaking of price, the situation is similar to other ETA models; look at the prices of PRE-V PAMS from 1993-1996 and you will understand where the brand's fan base is and how much you can pay for 6497.

As for 8 daylight and 47mm, like 390, only PAM203 and PAM368 come to mind, which are destro, but have a more humane price.

You are too kind, and your message really helps understand more completely the Panerai world. I will closely consider these options, especially the pam368 destro which was not on my radar.

...I come from the world of guitar collectors, and understand that certain guitars, like watches, can be priced higher mainly due to collectability rather than usability. So yes, I am trying to find that balance.

Thanks again

best thing about the 6497 movement -

beautiful graffiti movements such as g series pams or 127
Bulletproof
Easy to service
Parts are cheap to replace if required
Don't need panerai to service.

I would always prefer the 6497 or ETA movement over an in house movement that are notoriously unreliable.

If you do still want the ultimate Pam, my choice is for the 127.

Although bigger than 44’s that done crystal is just perfect imho

I’m so glad I have a super franken of the 127!

Super franken 127? Pics or it didn't happen!

I agree, I am really happy with my noob127, but perhaps the gen a bit outside my budget.

It’s the 372 no question. 47mm. Sandwich dial. In house movement. Under $8k. Check, check, check and check!
