Ok, I give up I have to buy one of these to see what all the fuzz is about.
I'm more of an classic IWC, VC and omega kind of guy but I guess its never to late to change.
So I understand that a lot of people here prefer hand wound PAMs why is that ?
Im more of a automatic man myself so I wonder what PAMs are automatic and which is concider to be most accurate out of the box ?

The auto Pams are a "recent" phenomenon, IIRC. A lot of people here and on the gen Panerai forums view the hand-wind models as being more true to the Panerai heritage.

The 6497 powered ones have a bit more character, IMO.

If you just want to get one to see what it's about there are some good cheap ones with CN movements... even power reserves...

I don't know why people like handwind over auto... I mean you can handwind and auto if you want.

I got one to see what the PAM thing was all about, pretty sure my tiny wrists wouldn't like it, but I have to say they grow on you... fast!

The handwind movements are very nice to look at. The solid casebacks are a little boring - to me.

Both are accurate - as far as the ones I have seen are concerned.

I suppose I'm the odd man out, but I'd never buy a manual mechanical watch. Panerai is my favourite watch, but I'll only buy automatics. As I understand, the only ones available as automatic AND swiss movement are 063, 029, 196, 188, 250, and a couple of wierd GMT models on Silix's site that I am not sure are representations of real models. I finally broke down and bought a 186 Arktos GMT with the asian 7750, but it was only because I HAD to have that watch. It is freakin awesome.

handwound is popular....

i am not sure it that is just a recent phenomenon.....i loved these movements from the very beginning....they are uncomplicated.....reliable.....easy to work on....and they have been around for ahhhhhhhhhhhh...the oldest Unitas style movement i have is from 1890....in a " marriage " IWC watch....had it serviced...runs perfect ever since ! I love the decorations...and a solid caseback is a crime !!
I owned a lot of Unitas powered watches.....Zeno, Eberhard Traversetolo Vitre, Revue Thommen, Maurice Lacroix, Glycine.....very good experiences.
what i would love to have...is a modified 6497...or 6498 in a Chronoswiss Timemaster...used only for around 2000 USD .....wonderful !!

Hi,

the manuals are preferred by some because they "justify" the case size.

big watches with small auto movements on display look poor IMO.

My favourite (fantasy) auto panny :

The original one would have been a manual, but manual and screw down crowns don't mix.

Don't forget the 088 gmt, I have one of those with mods and its an amazing watch with a hi-beat asian 7750.
The newer asian 7750 28,8k movt.s work great with the non-chrono models like the Panerai gmt's. Nothing overloading the gear train, bullet proof almost.

Yeah, don't forget the 088. A little noisy and if you really get it swinging your whole arm will move with it!

Spot on for time - +/- 5 seconds a day.

How so? I've got a couple of manual wind watches with screw down crowns, I haven't experienced any issues.

Hi, OK perhaps I should have said "don't mix well IMO" /mds.

I agree. The 28.8 just running the seconds at 9 seem quite dependable, though I would still service it upon arrival. I do not have any experience with the 7750 GMTs. I am not sure how they "bastardized" (if at all) the movement to achieve the gmt function. I haven't heard any complaints from owners though.

I am also very interested in seeing how the Asian 7750 based GMT movement adds that function. The gen uses a modified 7750 and I have been wondering if it is possible to buy an 88 or 89 and swap out the movement but retain the gears. I still am not sure which 7750 is in the new GMT's and whether the hands would fit which may make it a moot point.

yes, glass back is nice for looking

glass back is nice for looking and the hand-wind movement unitas6497 is not expensive, compare the 7753 swiss automitic movt,i think eta6497 is better.1 for the price ,2 for the looking.
and also ,if use the asian 7750 auto matic ,i think the quality will be not so good.

thanks for all the answers, now Im gonna get one for sure. One last question is thera any models without the 7750 ? let say 2824 or 2836 etc much more easy to get it serviced later on.

I don't believe there are any base dial automatics. The 7750 movement is needed to get the seconds at 9 o'clock, so you couldn't use any of the non-chrono ETA movements.
