I have an ARF Datejust 41 and something I didn't spot during QC is that the cyclops alignment isn't true against 3-o-clock. I have looked at a few other photos of this watch here on RWI and they too seem "off" vs the alignment against the crown / 3-o-clock. Having checked trusty's website, even their photos look like the Cyclops is not aligned in this way.

However, going to the Rolex website and looking at their cyclops alignment, it too looks like the Cyclops sits higher than dead centre.

So my question is to your Rolex experts is - should the cyclops be aligned "true" against 3 o clock and these photos are all just a perspective thing, or does it actually sit slightly higher than dead centre and I should just pipe down?

Thanks in advance!

Ben

Seems the dial is a bit off and has to be turned a bit clockwise, an easy fix...

It depends on the angle of the picture. The pic that you're showing is taken slightly from below. BTW the "photograph" from the Rolex website is a 3D rendering, not a real life pic

Agree with the previous post. All depends on the angel. I actually ordered this same watch from TT. QC pics had the same issue and now it's on my wrist and looks perfect.

Good point - also noticed that issue on many TD pics of the Datejust. Those cyclopses (is that even a word?) are all over the place... :rollingonthefloor:

Ok, so the Cyclops should be dead level with the 3 o clock centerline, which mine is not. :(

It's pretty rare that a cyclops is not centered at 3 o'clock unless it is also crooked. Of course with reps you can have a cyclops where the upper and lower edges are not parallel meaning no matter how the crystal is rotated, the cyclops will always look crooked on the top, the bottom, or both.

If a cyclops is not centered at 3 o'clock and it IS crooked, the crystal can be rotated to fix it. You must observe the cyclops from perfectly straight on and compare it to the crown's imaginary extended centerline to determine it's placement accuracy. A dial, a date window, or a datewheel being off can affect your perception of the cyclops position.

Some info here about parallax error that may help with understanding viewing angles.

Thank you for the comprehensive reply, I have it in with a watchsmith to look at another issue so will ask him to take a look at it and realign as best he can. Perhaps I should get him to just take it off...

Lol, I have seen that video before. What an idiot! On a gen!? I have removed a bunch of cyclopes but would never put heat or a blade to a rep, let alone a gen. Wow.

I get the feeling the video owner didn't really care for the watch as it was lol

It's actually not that uncommon - read about getting it removed from time to time on a gen forum. Strange world.

I was commenting on removing the cyclops while the crystal was still installed on the watch. Heat congeals the movement lubricants and risks discoloring the datewheel. And using a razor blade in close proximity to the bezel and case is just foolishly careless.

I just took the mag bubble off of a sub (a cheap dh gate sub) for a friend because it was getting scratched a little. I think it looks good. Although I don't know if I'd do it to a Datejust. I might.
