Yes and even more so in Replica form. Your wife is astute. I don't ever remember changing the strap on a swatch. They were basically the same watch with different dials and colours and themes and people collected them. Panerai use the most simplest numbering system to get us to want more of the same making us thing they are different. Its genius. Its like pop music

Points to your wife for a keen awareness of the novelty factor. Panerai's business model of releasing the insane variation of body styles has been brilliant in terms of selling watches to the broadest possible appeal. At the same time, it might have shot itself in the foot in terms of the proliferation of high-end replicas. Who's going to know the difference except for the pro's. On the other hand, Swatch (and I own several) has always been the cool watch for the average Joe (or Jane), especially in Europe. I'm sure that the cost, engineering, craftsmanship and resale value is not lost on your wife. Try to find a decent Gen Pam 111H for under 5000.00. Maybe on eBay in fair condition. The comparison starts to degrade quickly. They're both excellent watches in the sense that they both tell time. Swatch maybe even better. Beyond that, it's not a fair comparison.
