Are PAMs the "Swatches" of today?

I have been looking at straps and bracelets for my incoming PAM104. I have been talking to my wife about the options and getting her opinion. Her responses have been noticeably lackluster. Finally she just asked, "so basically you want a more expensive Swatch? You didn't get enough of that in the 80s?"

I had all but forgotten about these. I must admit, I see a resemblance in the mindset. Now if I could just put on and remove a PVD coating at will, I'd be set!

Panerai should be so lucky. Swatch is now the watch industry's 800 pound gorilla.

I think I know what point you want to make, so my answer is, "No."

A different time, the 80's.

Swatch had a different business model, reaching the masses. Panerai, not so much.

Oops I was going to say: I doubt that a $10,000 watch is like a $100 swatch

I see your point. But I don't think they are the same.

Meh, I don't think there was much of a point to begin with. Mostly nostalgia mixed with an interestingly objective viewpoint from my wife. I had mostly forgotten about these things. Swatch is synonymous with ETA and Omega to me now.

I actually get your point, Movadent.
Are they following the Swatch business plan from the 80's? - No.
But have they taken that to a high-end extreme? - Possibly!

Basically, the idea behind Swatch in the 80's was to make a Swiss-built inexpensive watch in about 4 or 5 basic variations (not so very different from each other), and allow the customer to customize the watch with a plethora of straps and case guards and bezels, etc.

The Panerai business model seems to be to make a Swiss-built expensive watch in about 4 or 5 basic variations (not so very different from each other), and allow the customer to customize (or choose customizations already made by the factory) the watch with a plethora of straps and small case and bezel variations, etc.

But other than that, I see no similarity at all. ;-)

When people ask me to describe my affection for PAMs, it usually starts with " you remember swatch? Yeah this is like that except...."
Believe me I get your wife's point!

Every day I wish I had more of what I got in the 80's.......... today I'm just considered that "creepy old guy" just for looking at what I used to get back in the 80's. :(

I believe the G-shocks today carry a closer resemblance to the old swatch watches of the 80s.

You can put a bull bar them, change straps, change bezels, change case... Hell you can even swap modules.

Touché. I work with a guy who rotates the bands on his G-Shock. He is sporting white on white right now. It looks almost as bad as a swatch. It looks pretty funny with a well tailored suit.

Maybe Pams are the 80s Swatches of the rep world would be a better statement.

She has a point.

Difference is that one brand is based on great and innovative design, the other is Panarai ....
