The vintage watches issue crossed my mind while I was responding earlier, but I decided not to touch on it - as it's such a specialist area, and certainly one where "caveat emptor" is absolutely to the fore. I don't think I could ever even consider dipping my fingers into that shark-infested boobytrapped minefield- for all the reasons you mention.

I wasn't trying to be awkward but it definitely in my opinion should be considered as vintage Rolex are obviously so sought after.

I agree with you though, buyers should certainly be extra vigilant as there are too many supposed gens that are no longer original in any way!

Age and stage I think. I was 30'ish and my first 'real' watch was a gen. 16600 Sea-Dweller . It was my first high quality watch , was bigger, shinier and significantly heavier than any watch I'd owned before and I was king of the world. And my boss at the time who was a prize knob-head had a quartz Tag Heuer. Yes, I was a shallow young man ... now I'm older.

My 2nd real watch was a bit underwhelming. Was a lovely Pre-Moon Speedie (DON bezel and all) , purchased on-line and when it arrived, the lightweight construction caught me by surprise. Same goes for old 5513s' and 1675s' really. I think a lot of fellas bought up on Nixons and big-ass micro-brand dive watches are surprised when they first pick up a current issue Rolex and certainly a vintage (lightweight with quite flimsy bracelets) . Ever wondered why some folk just ove the big, chunky and satisfyingly heavy Deep Sea (gen. or rep.) ?

No. Having worked on my share of genuine and replica movements, the Asian clones don't hold a candle to Swiss made. They might be able to mimic the aesthetics but the quality of materials and precision of parts isn't there.
This is very true for Rolex and my mind can feel the conceptual weight of a genuine movement.
It's also true for ETA based movements made/modified by brands like Omega and Breitling. Compared with Asian clones and even genuine Swiss made they has a, what the French call, je ne sais quoi. You can practically throw the parts at one another with them smoothly and securely falling in to place. And don't get me started on the screws. I just love screwing!
But back to your question, do I feel underwhelmed by genuine Rolexes? No.

It's all good until you are under the hood.

However, most people are not looking under the hood. Quality is aesthetics. A rep is a bit like having a car with a base engine but slapping the upscale badge on it.

I currently own (amongst other watches) a gen Rolex 126655, a gen Tudor BB58 Harrod’s Edition as well as a rep Daytona panda (Noob/CF bezel/ARF dial and clasp), rep 116600 SD 4000 and a rep 6240; before I had the 126655 I had a gen 116622 that replaced a rep 116622.

Honestly I don’t live in fear of scratching them or them being stolen - I just live my life and enjoy knowing that I can pull off the reps or gens with ease.

I will say however that I would never under any circumstance consider a non-gen gold watch, Rolex or otherwise. That’s my line in the sand!

Aside from that, getting the reps serviced can prove a little tricky and, of course, knowing you haven’t lost money on most Rolex sport watches is a good feeling...

That’s a good line to draw because Gold or Platinum watches are much heavier than reps

Unless you go for one of those Tourbillon, Skeleton or sapphire case back models ;)

I mean with those types, the hood will be exposed and reps will be even more transparent that they are reps;)

Posted in other thread.

This AirKing is not even a super rep. It is serviced and keeps great time. For me or anyone, I bet there isn't much difference between this AirKing or the gen Explorer.

Rep Aiking is 6% of price the gen Explorer.

Just took delivery of my first gen Rolex. Been wearing a superfranken sub for a year. It’s a different experience and it is worth it, quite literally.I still love the reps.

Finally got a new Rolex gen piece after years of wearing higher quality rep pieces. I've a collection of big brand Swiss gen pieces so I know generally the quality vs reps. But the interesting thing is with the Rolex, the quality of the gen isn't that much better than a high end rep...

For example I can see and feel a huge difference in quality between my gen METAS Omega PO and a noob LV. But between the gen Rolex and the noob LV, not actually that much difference in feel. It's a little underwhelming. But I was prepared for it, I waited to on a Rolex gen because as a lot of us watch nerds, we see right through the marketing.

Anyone else felt this way or maybe felt opposite of this?

Definitely depends on what rep you’re comparing.

Just bought a gen 124060, from a franken 114060, gen everything except case, bracelet, and movement. The difference in visual quality isn’t huge but it’s there enough to make it worth it, the brushing especially. The action of everything on the other hand, is far better. I also had a gen LMPO and went to a vsf, arguably the best rep of this brand. They did a great job but knowing those details that aren’t quite right? Drives me nuts. The settling feeling of seeing perfection on the wrist and knowing it’s inside as well is anything but underwhelming.

Never thought I would either but here I am. Not sure what you mean with the business model.
