In Australia and England, pie means mostly meat in pastry.
In the USA, pie normally means a sweet thing eg cherry pie or apple pie (although we also have sweet pies)

I was told recently that Americans don't have savory pies like us? Is this true? Surely a land colonized by englishmen had meat pies at some point!?

Were they thrown in the sea along with the tea?

Pretty much just chicken pot pies. Nothing like a pocket pie with meat in it. Id eat one though...

Heres our idea of pie - dessert:

Actually we have turnovers which can be filled with turkey or some other meat. As mentioned, turkey and chicken pot pies are very poplar here, especially the frozen kind..

Don't you call the savory pies, pasties?

Pasties are different to pies, but not a lot different.

I've seen both ways statside... A meat pie made like an acutal pie using beef or chicken and veggies. Other way is the Pasty like cybee mentioned. Very popular in Northeast Wisconsin and the Michigan Upper Peninsula. Pasties I believe came from Europe originally and were popular with the underground miners, they could wrap it in foil and place it on a heat source to keep warm. Ok, rambling on now, signing off! :lolcina:

In the South Western states we have empanadas.
These are Latin pastry pockets filled with different kinds of chicken, beef, or sweet filling.

In the states, we have calzones and pot pies.

I don't recall seeing any meat pies in England when I was there. Too many pizza & burgers over there.
