Advice Requested: PAM 417 Broken Hands

I second what Raddave mentioned, if you tightened the plate and the gears where not aligned you probably damaged the harbors or snapped the escape wheel pin. This happened to me as well the first time I opened a movement :)

If you want to give it a last try I suggest you check carefully the escape wheel first, it should have a thin pin both at the bottom and at the top which goes inside the jewel. If it is still intact you can try to re-align the wheels, then starting from the center wheel slide carefully the plate in position.
Tighten the screws just a little and check if the train works, if the gears turn you can tighten the screws fully otherwise remove the plate and restart.
You need steady hands and a LOT of patience to succeed.

This is actually alot easier to do with pallet fork and main barrel removed as you can check the rotaion of the gear clusters that way

Thanks everyone for your help.

I was able to get the hands back on. It was a relatively easy exercise (except for the movement holder tab that fell into the balance wheel – but will talk about that later).

Here are the websites that I found helpful.

Here are the caveats I’d recommend:

1. Have a range of small containers to store components so you don’t get them mixed up.
2. Be sure to release the pressure from the mainspring. Think it’s called the ratchet click. The easy process is described in Cwazy’s YouTube videos.
3. Movement tab can be very difficult to reattach. Take your time.
4. Don’t rush.
5. WATCH OUT FOR COMPONENTS FALLING INTO THE BALANCE WHEEL.
6. DON’T TAKE APART THE MOVEMENT. TAKES MORE THAN NEWBIE SKILL TO PUT BACK TOGETHER.

If I had to do it again, it’d likely take less than 30 minutes.

Challenges / Resolution:
Don’t drop anything into the Balance Wheel. I was dumb and took the Fourth Wheel Bridge off. Couldn’t get the escape wheel to fit into the bridge.

Got a watchsmith to help. Luckily no damage to arbor/balance staff on the third, fourth or escape wheels.

The watchsmith took out the balance bridge, the balance wheel off along with other components. Then he put the movement back together one part at a time, testing for continuity. Took him less than 10 minutes to get it back working again.
