Advice on Cartier Tank

Hey guys - first time posting on here after following the community for a few months now...

Thinking about pulling the trigger on either the Cartier Tank Must with the bracelet from the 8848F Factory or the beautiful Cartier Tank Louis made by AF in Rose Gold.

On Puretime, it seems they market/titled the Tank Louis as a Tank Must as it is titiled
"Tank Must RG 25.5mm AF 1:1 Best Edition White Dial on Brown Leather Strap Ronda Quartz"

Does anyone have any advice on which model is better? My heart is set on the Rose Gold and the beautiful guilloche dial, but I want to know how strong the gold plating really is. I don't anticipate a super active lifestyle with the watch, so scratching it isn't a huge worry... I do spend a lot of time in Florida, however, and think maybe the sweat or sun can cause it to flake sooner than later.

Any experience/advice would be greatly recommended and my apologies if I forgot anything!

If you're going to wear while sweating, just remember to wipe it down fully after each time. As long as you take care of the watch, the finish should last a while. If you're rough on it, say goodbye.

Great advice!

are you saying this from common knowledge or has it been your experience with these exact rep models?

I don't mind the maintenance and I could see myself wiping off the sweat and taking care of it - I guess i wanted to know how good/bad the AF factory's rose gold finish is on these models.

Thanks again, by the way!

From personal experience. Not with that exact model, but with plated watches overall. No matter which version it is, plating needs care.

I second this. Gold plated watches look great if worn very infrequently and otherwise well cared for. If they're worn everyday, they look like crap, fast, even in gen.

I've got a couple gold plated reps, and a few gold plated gens (including a couple Rolex gens) but they're worn to weddings and funerals, then wiped down well and put away until the next event. Too much time on the wrist, even sitting at a desk, and they start to show that they're plated, rather than solid, very quickly.

Take a look at Ebay auctions for gen gold plated watches (Omega, Breitling, Cartier, Rolex, etc) and you'll see what I mean.

Love the insight - I'll be doing that!

I was really into the rose gold, but now I'm maybe swaying to the Tank Must in Stainless Steel with the bracelet... Possibly AF.

I would love to see any pictures from anyone's rep showing the natural wear in either of these models!

Honestly, take a look at vintage gen Cartier Tank watches, especially the gold plated over silver models from 30-50 years ago...it'll give you a good idea what to expect if you're too hard on your rep.

That said, the Cartier Tank is one of the very few models where peeling, flaking, thinning gold plating is actually accurate to the gen, lol.

This is what the vintage gen models start to look like. The rep will probably wind up looking similar unless you're vigilant about keeping it clean and free from oils, acids, and other harsh conditions.

As long you take good care of your watches, gold plated ones do last pretty OK but keep them off washing chemicals if possible

Thanks

good to hear! I wouldn't mind the gold wearing off if it lasted me around 2-3 years. What kind of expectancy are we talking??

I've already seen photos of some with the gold wearing off after 6 months, but again, I'm assuming that it's because they didn't properly execute maintenance on the watch to prevent it...

Has anyone had their Tank rep long enough to see the gold plating last that long??

THANKS TO ALL THE REPLIES BY THE WAY!!

I'll give you a visual answer: go to eBay, search for Cartier Tank, sort by cheapest first, and then watch the horror show of the 1970s and 1980s Must de Cartier watches that came from Paris with super thick gold plating . . .

Now have envision cheap plating on a watch that as a GEN has solid gold, and you're one scratch, ding, and dent away from having to add it to your thrift store pile.

appreciate this - think I'm definitely going with the Tank Must in stainless... OFFICIALLY CONVINCED.

Anyone have a preference over AF or K11 when it comes to the Tank Must in Large on the stainless steel bracelet?

I've looked around and it seems that people are starting to prefer the K11 over the AF because of the cabochon?
K11 has Cartier typed on the inside, AF currently doesn't...

I would love to hear some more opinions and thank you for making my first post so interactive!

Hi, welcome . Just to talk about our common passion … F O R M E ( THIS IS ONLY MY MODEST AND LAUGHABLE OPINION ) any quartz watch is pure sh*t . This year I wanted absolutely an automatic Thank Solo . To find it is been an odissey but this problem is been resolved from my local seller and friend of a life ( buying from him I have to pay more than from a TD because you look and touch with hand the watch without to wait but, above all, without custom’s issues ). One month of his researches and I received my magnificent ( in MY OPINION ) Thank Solo equipped with an automatic Miyota . The watch is perfect for me . The only one problem is that it has a transparent caseback with a perfect Cartier rotor and the genuine one have a closed caseback that i’m actually am searching for . Greetings from Italy .
