Speaking of the Daylight, Silix used to sell a Daylight with 7753 for around $650. Take that and add some gold and you're at about $700ish. So I'd say that my estimate of $750 as a fair price would be about right.
When Silix was selling that 196, 7753s were available. Since then, ETA has stopped making them. You cannot buy new 7753s.

Yes, it's overpriced, but it's a gold watch with a 7753. It's bound to be overpriced. If you don't like the price, get it from River, Ruby or Silix. I'm sure they'll do it for you for less. Be aware that the $650 watch from Silix is now a $750 watch, so your $750 estimate on the Santos should be revised to $850 or higher.

This isn't a hugely overpriced watch, it's just a slightly overpriced watch.

A dealer making $100-$175 on a watch is a pretty good deal for the dealer and I think most of us don't mind paying that. I do have a problem with a dealer making somewhere around $500 dollars off me or other members.
The profit on a watch should be a percentage, not an absolute. A Rolex dealer is making a few grand on some watches remember.

If he's making $175 on a $1000 watch, he probably can't afford the risk of losing one to customs.

Btw, its not just that the 7753 doesn't have a recessed date wheel. The date window on asian 7750s (tricompax) is actually in a slightly different position. Genuine 7753 allows the possibility of adding a genuine dial, and having a near perfect replica. Way too overpriced IMO, but try doing it yourself. It will likely be close to that once taxes, and S&H for all the parts are factored in.

I agree that profit should increase in correlation with the value of the product and in this case I figured that in to my estimates somewhat. Certainly Andrew deserves some extra profit for having the 7753 available and put in the watch. If Silix is selling a watch with 7753 at $750 then a similar watch with a little gold, only on the bezel, which is so cheap to do (the difference between a full gold daytona and a SS version is $30 on Andrew's site), should be priced at about $800. Andrew and Josh always charge a little bit more, but do you really think it is just slighty overpriced? We're talking overpriced by about $400 dollars. That's not slightly overpriced as far as I'm concerned. $875, $950, maybe even a grand, that might be just slightly overpriced. Making a ridiculous $500 dollar profit, that is hugely overpriced.

Just went back to Andrew's site and noticed there is a 7753 Santos in SS for $798, so why the $500 dollar price increase for a little gold on the bezel? That should mean I have about 3/4 of an ounce of 24kt solid gold on that bezel.

A&J have to cover themselves in case of customs seizures remember. One lost watch at that price is hard to re-coup.

Not hard to recoup at this price, lose one and sell another you're even.

With as many watches as these guys sell one lost watch like this will suck, but I doubt they'd lose any sleep or have a hard time covering the cost with a couple other watch sales during the day.

Brand9 have a 7753-based Santos in 14K Gold for under $600? It's worth getting for the movement at that point.

Yeah, it's overpriced because it's an expensive idea, not because you're being scalped.
