From experience the whole soaking for a day deal is way over the top.

I think a dip for a few hours is good to go.

I too used baby oil, but soaked the links and worked for 15 mins, then washed off with warm soapy water and repeated a week later. Everything fine!

Although you do tend to grab a little dust around bezel and casing for a week or so, but eventually this clears!

In both cases I would take the watch of the bracelet, also the clasp?

Beginning of the thread... there was this question that no one answered. i dont think it would hurt the clasp but should we just give the whole bracelet a dip?

I usually put 3/4 cup of olive oil, put chopsticks on top of the cup and dip the bracelet into the oil, while keeping the SEL and case above the oil. I'll leave the watch overnight in this position and rinse with soap and warm water the next day. :D

Sounds dangerous! but saves the trouble of taking off the bracelet which i currently don't know how to do... im sure its easy.

So i guess its between veggie oil and baby oil.... they both seem harmless and a lot easier than dousing it in wd40.

Wd40 is designed for losening rusted bolts etc and makes a poor lubricant. It is however an exelent cleaner as described above as it contains solvents. If you have a supply of bulk WD (not a spray pack) a load of this in an ultrasonic cleaner will remove all the crap in a braclet. Keep it as you can use it again and again.

For lube Fakey's Baby oil solution is far more desirable than olive/vege oil. Reason being that organic oils will break down (oxidise) and rot. In doing so not only will they smell if there is a bit left after cleaning but they produce an acid in the process. Not a good thing around your watches!

The absalute best product would be one called Break Free which is a gun oil (umong other uses). This contains PTFE (Teflon) lubricant which has a lower coefficent of friction than wet ice on wet ice! Second best would be LSA (Light Small Arms) oil. The baby oil is however quite good enough and a hell of a lot cheaper.

I read a good article on another forum where a guy demonstrated using a bike chain oil. A kind of dry lube. It was a a spray on wax kept liquid with solvent and as he sprayed it on the solvent rinsed out the dirt and the evaporated leaving the wax behind. I haven't tried it myself though.

it works I use the rock n roll dry lube extreme (for bikes) and it works a treat easy to do and has great results :notworthy:

I read that but can't remember where.

I have "white chain spray-on oil" but the thought of having that at my wrist is not comforting. I think I'll go with baby oil. And use the ultrasonic cleaner in the lab, too.

OK I worked metal most of my life about 40 years including four years of school..

First WD-40 is great stuff to stop rust but is not a lubricant...

Second I would not use most lubes on my skin..

There are some dry spray lubes with Teflon but to hard to get in bracelet..

What I would use is Mineral Oil /Baby Oil to clean the bracelet I would use Mineral Spirits and soft brush.. You can thin down the mineral oil with some MS as it will penetrate the bracelet more easy..

Penetrating or water dispersing oil like 3-1 or WD-40 and others are not lubricants.. Myself I use nothing other than soap and water every few months to remove the sweat salts from the bracelet..

If anyone need a penetrating oil Kano Labs the best which is Kroil or the aerosol aerokoril http://www.kanolabs.com/

Let me add WD-40 is NOT a Penetrating Oil.....
It was made to stop Atlas Rockets from rusting it is the 40th formula of a Water Dispersing oil (Anti-Rust) it also works as many other things but not a penetration oil...

Here is the story

I had the bracelet of both the new Blue Cerachrome and the IWC 3717 put into an ultrasonic cleaner (laboratory grade). Result: No visible residue. They were obviously clean to start with.

Just FYI, I'll baby-oil them anyway.
