Your Opinion on Fantasy Watches

Not my cup of tea ! I couldn't wear a 'fantasy watch' personally as it would just say I'm a cheapkskate and would be the ultimate shame if I got called out where I work. I'd rather spend the money on my kids than get a gen ! My work place is a like a watch showroom, all my colleagues have the gens......I know it's each to their own but a fantasy doesn't do a thing for me as they remind me of the guy on the beach selling them out of a briefcase in Jamaica or Canal Street in NY or the backstreets in Dubai with the Indian traders..

This is the fantasy watch that I own.....it was my first rep purchase, ticks away like a dream and gets quite a few days out. It's a fun watch, not bad to look at and tells the time very accurately.

For VB...

Hilarious!...Laughed 'til I, umm...Stopped.
Which of the following options could better misappropriate the average 'rep to be taken as gen.' buyer?

A.)
No man is an island, entire of itself
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main
if a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were
any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls
it tolls for thee.

John Donne (the most oft misquoted man on the entire interweb thingy).

B.)
-Superficial.
-Grandiose.
-Entrepreneurial.
-Narcissistic.
-Shameless.
-Dishonest (pathologically).
-Self-centred.
-Impulsive.

Simply eight (of many) randomly chosen adjectives generally accepted as pertaining to the 'sociopathic'.

...

For God's sake I think I'd rather work somewhere else than be in fear of assholes wearing gens! What a life to lead.....I'd wear an obvious replica and tell 'em what prats they are if they commented.

Just my 2 centimos worth.

I guess what promted the question was a realization that I wear reps and Gens on a daily basis and like many .......chnage watches a couple of times a day....over time I lost tract of (and frankly gave up caring)whether I had a Rep on or a Gen......nobody seems to know or even care.....so why should I......

I wear watches now because I just damn like them and I feel good having many to choose from...depending on mood...whim...or what I am wearing......Guess I stopped being anal about accuracy when I started to enjoy them and realized .......nobody cares....certainly I want as good a quality watch as I can get....but I really dont care if they're fantasy or not......

when someone says "Nice Watch"...I just say thank you.....dont even look to see if its a Gen or a Rep

maybe a better question might be...."out of all the thousands of Rep wearers......and all the thousands of days that they wear Reps.....what percentage of the time is someone called out?".......like airline flights or miles traveled...I'll bet its about .00000001% of the time....no fair including your friends or acquaintences who know about you hobby.

I only got called out once while in line at the post office. Just happened I was wearing my gen Breitling, so no cause for alarm. I was standing in line next to an old lady probably in her 80's (accompanied by her daughter, I believe). She said, "My what beautiful watch that is. That's really a nice watch." I never had somebody repeated it to me twice. The good old lady has taste in watches too. :)

Anyway, I like fantasy watches as long as they don't look stupid. The Patek that I just got recently is a classy example. The power reserve indicator even works perfectly. I couldn't be more happy.

This isn't an indictment on anyone,

Of course it isn't sweetie....hence you quoting me....!

but I often believe that people who don't AT ALL care about what society thinks of them, are rather sociopathic.

Frankly my dear.....I don't give a damn.....I didn't say that I don't care what society thinks of me.....I said I could care less about those who are superficially judgemental of me.....normally people with a large collection of superfluous material items......you know like.....30 ROLEX.....or 30 LV handbags.....or even a plethora of Panerai with accompanying accoutrements for retaining them on their wrist....!

Rave on John Donne.......did I mention that I don't care much for parlour hall psychologists either.....!

Brownvaliant, this topic of gen/fantasy/why we are into replicas/do you care?, has been covered innumerable times, I'm sure on these forums, right?

About a month ago, when a fellow newbie over at RWG.CC posted "Why do we do this?", I posted a Chinese laundry list of reasons, tongue-in-cheek as is my wont, as I do most of the time on forums.

At the end of the day, none of us mean anything to the other, unless personal relationships are forged, so insults and personal pointed barbs at people should leave most people cold.

In saying what you did, though, it's like you believe people are not self-aware, and I assure you, when most people hit their heads on their pillows at night, they know exactly who they are.

That's certainly the case with me, to boot, the daughter of a psychiatrist (sigh).

Here http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?s=&showtopic=38815&view=findpost&p=283071 is what I wrote then:

"If we were to put us collectively on a psychiatrist's sofa, I bet you s/he would find that:

- We were once deprived of something we really really wanted in our childhood. We make up for it now.

- We all say we prefer quality over quantity, by getting the best or 1:1 reps available, but is that true, seriously true? I say we all suffer from a "more is better" condition, also known as "being cheap" and "greed", if are being honest with ourselves.

- We have various levels of obsessive compulsive disorder, feeding it by the choosing/emailing/waiting/frustration/disappointment/joy which comes which comes with collecting reps.

- Strap collecting makes our consciences feel a little better about ourselves, as they are the one legitimate and oft-expensive piece that "legitimise" our reps (ergo, the more you collect, the more problems you have with your conscience).

- We like the stares and compliments about our watches, as reflecting something positive about ourselves -- depending on watch, it can be about originality, imposing strength, or suspicions of wealth it grants us. This is a self-esteem issue.

- Finally, we have vaguely criminal tendencies, one and all. 'Nuff said.

And yes, I know. It would have to be a pretty damn big sofa."

As I said over at RWG, when Admin had to remove your personal barbs at me because you felt you had to "test my mettle", TTK, that I won't take advantage of a man in distress like you are at the moment.

So we'll chat some other day, shall we?

As an aside, should I have levelled a broadside which nicked you by mistake, I apologise without reservation.

if we call it FANTASY because the original maker did not make it, that's is one thing...

But I have seen some FANTASY watches that should right be deservent of being on the rosters of Siwss makers...that's how nice looking some are....

Ahh....my little Papagena.....succint and correct ...it's all about latency....or indeed even latex...... :D

"Ein Mädchen oder Weibechen wüncscht Papageno sich"

A sweetheart or a pretty little wife
is Papageno's wish

A willing, billing lovey dovey,
would be my most tasty little dish

Now that would be eating and drinking
I'd live like a Prince
without thinking

The wisdom of old would be mine

A woman's much better than wine

much better than wine..! :D
