THIS IS FOR CLEANING THE BRACELET ONLY - DO NOT SOAK THE HEAD IN OIL

Those of you who have been around the forum for a while have, no doubt, read the postings regarding soaking metal watch bracelets to loosen them up. Well here is pictoral evidence of why you want "wash" every new watch before you wear it.

Step 1: A zip lock bag and some WD-40.
Look how clear the oil is

Step 2: Removed the head and dropped my BRAND NEW UNWORN Planet Ocean bracelet into the oil

Step 3: 15 Minutes later

Step 4: Results - look at the cr@p floating in the ziplock - sure don't want that rubbing against my wrist all day!

So not only does an oil bath make the bracelet more supple and flexible it gets the nasty leftover factory junk out as well.

FYI: It wasn't just one nasty Planet Ocean. I have ordered from Ruby, King, Andrew, WBK and Josh and every watch has this much gunk come out with the oil bath.

do you just spray WD-40 into the bag? Or are you buying it in a liquid form. Sorry not up to date on my lubricants...

I've got some old watches I'm going to try this on. I'm almost afraid to see what comes off them.

Interesting post, but the process is *IMHO* terribly flawed.

Since when do WD-40 and water mix? WD literally stands for Water Displacement.

I bet you anything that if you put the bracelet on a bag with warm water and shake it, it will also come out dirty after a while.

I assume the same (if not better) results can be obtained by generously spraying the bracelet with WD40, letting it sit a few minutes so that you give it a chance to clean and dissolve the crap, brush it using a toothbrush, and finally rinse with warm water.

Regards,

I normally use jewelery soap to brush and soak my watches and it looks just about the same. It is just all the oil and dead cells from your skin nasty huh.

I have a slightly different technique.

I use one of those Ultrasonic Jewellery cleaners,It just uses a little bit of water and a couple of drops of washing up liquid. Just drop the bracelet into it,wait ten minutes and remove from the vile broth left behind.

Then I put a five or six drops of a good Silicon Lubricant in a bag (not WD for the reasons given) and leave to marinade.

That has been my method for cleaning SS parts too!
a little windex or amonia mixed with water and the SS parts in there for 10 minutes and eeeeeww.. what a mess!

I'm wondering about one thing:

Soaking it in oil, would that not loosen up some of the pins in the links that we dont want loose in the risk of the bracelet coming open while wearing it?

Or, the buckle being so lubricated, would that not risk the diver extension to come open inadvertantly like so many faulty bracelets do ehich is a complaint from many, anyways?

My only question is that if they are using graphite as a dry lubricant, isn't it possible that you are simply washing away something that really should be there?
