As most of you are probably aware ETA will supposedly not be suppling their movements to anyone outside the Swatch group, with this in mind many of the brand names outiside of the Swatch group arien't using these movements in their newer offering and have now moved to a Stelitta 26J automatic which is almost an exact copy of the 2824-2 this Swiss company has many more movements also and many more in the works.

So the question is if the name brand companies can't get large supplies of ETAs and soon won't be able to get them why then do the reps factories seem to have an endless supply of these movements??

The rep facotories have owned Switzerland

for years..

In Switzerland now, to be a native speaker, you

have to know both both Mandarin and Cantonese.

You know...Ronda makes an automatic movement for those who want swiss. You don't see many of them nor do you hear much about them. Maybe they will get some of the ETA business.

I think ETA prices will rise dramatically, I currently have 200 new ETA movements in storage as an investment.

They are stopping in 2010, thats still a fair way away
They are reducing sales as of 2008 and whole movements are already getting rare and prices have already started to climb.

Two scenarios should there be no

ETA movements available:

#1. Rep manufacturers have a last meal before going to
the poorhouse...

#2. Some means of producing reps without ETA movements is found...

Pessimists, the answer is number one.

Optimists (and pragmatists) the answer is number two....

I bought a gen with the new Stelita 26J movement and I gotta say its quite nice and visually the same as the ETA in fact you'd be hard pressed to know the diffrence it runs and winds very smooth the date clicks right at 12:00pm and at my last power reserve check it ran for about 46hrs. and can be adjusted jsut as easily as the ETA can be.

Oris just replaced the ETA with the 26J Stelita in their most popular diver watch.

Most of the parts are interchangeable between the eta and st movement too, nothing is going to change, Swatchgroup will continue to build watches in Asia so there will always be surplus on the market there and companies like ST will take up the slack by 2010 combine that with the continued improvement in eta copied china movements and the supply of high quality high beat 282x copies will keep the industry humming right along.

Also Swatch group will still sell their movements completed with the eta hallmark on the rotor it is just the unfinished movements that larger companies buy that will go away which is why Richmont group is pumping lots of money into Stelita right now!!

Parts will continue to be available without any problem.

The Asian version of the ETA 2836 is already out there.
ZiggyZumba reviewed it and gave it a thumbs up.
Of course only time will tell if it is really any good.

Swiss ETA 2836 will eventually be like the Swiss ETA 7753.
It will be out there but very expensive.

I see where one day soon most reps will have the Asian 2836 copy.
Law of economics.

You are missing the point, Stelita Is a Swiss movement maker who will be expanding to take up the slack that ETA leaves behind as they decrease production numbers. The only real difference between the Stelita and ETA movement is the hallmark. Since the Stelita movement quality seems to be equal to ETA or better the ETA 282x movements won't have any great value. By 2010 the old ETA movements will just be the old versions of what Stelita is making. The only thing that would make the ETA movements valuable is if Stelita has a major problem expanding to meet demand as Swatch turns off the faucet and that is not going to happen since Stelita has the backing of several major watch companies outside of Swatch group who depend on a reliable supply of movements. I wouldn't be surprised if Swatch group had an interest in getting Stelita up and running just to ease the burden on them!

It seems you have made a wise decision on stocking up on these movements. You should make a nice profit on your investment. Nice move Bigshooter :D

Swatch will stop using the 2836 at some point anyway. The new Valgranges movements will take over.

Yes, let's clarify one thing just so people can actually do some research if needed. It's spelled Sellita

Their movements are listed on their website here: http://www.sellita.ch/catalogue/mvts_auto.html

As you can see, they make ETA movements from ETA parts, including the ETA stamp under the bridge. Once the source of ETA parts is stopped, Sellita will most likely suffer.

Or maybe they just assemble movements from ETA parts.
