Luth, your point is understood. You want to have new members do their own research, hoping that they will "get into watches".

If you just give them a  instead of teaching them how to find the answer, I think that you turn them away.

Great post, Mitch, worthy of a sticky IMO.

Discussions do need to happen, and somehow we need to close the gulf between noobs and vets. Sometimes it's the question is asked in the wrong way, just as often the question is answered in the wrong way.

I'll hold my hand up and say that I've been guilty of both in my time here, but I'd like the animosity to die down a little.

I agree Davey,,,, this post is the result of a conversation with Luth and I too have found myself on the wrong side of this discussion,,,,, I fudged a little on the title hoping to get new members involved such as the sentiments posted by Madtonic, so if a wiser member or mod wishes to change it I'd appreciate it,,,,, This is something we need to discuss because as things stand new members as well as long standing members wind up with hurt feelings and moral is damaged.....

I'am a noob myself!
And no one should be flamed for asking a question!
I can see being flamed for asking the same question over and over,,,and has been answered a million time though!
But i have seen some new member's get flamed for asking simple questions,,,,
all because maybe they didnt know where to look for the answer's,,,,or where to read!!
This is a awesome forum with some of the nicest members you can find anywhere! And has gave me a wealth of info about rep's!
But we have to agree to disagree,,that there is a point where we should help each other weather you think the question is stupid or not!
Not go out of your way to be rude to a new member!

I have went out of my way to help a many of new members since i have been here!!
But i have also have told them to read, read ,and read some more!
I do agree with Luth ,,,they are a lot of new members here to grab a Rep Rolex and never give back to the forum ever!!!
But how do we fix this?????

O.K., I'll put this up and let it be shot down. Without being condescending, suppose we had an initial membership that didn't allow access to all areas until a certain amount of time / post count was passed. People who just showed up to find out where to buy the best XXX could do just that and drift away, and for the others, the cream would rise to the top, just like it always does, and then a full membership would follow.

I think that is a good ideal,,,,But getting it implemented is another story!

Our opinion for any changes to the basic operations of the the forum is irrelevant, but our input has to be taken into some consideration.....All things considered, the discussion and ultimately education of new members will lead to less confrontations.....When a new member reads this post I believe it will shed some enlightenment as to the mindset of senior members.....and hopefully help in some small way.....

@Madtonic - mate, there's "bad noobs", and there's "good noobs", like in westerns.
Bad noobs demanding right direction in their first post, and it's crystal clear, why he's here, and that is his first, and 99% last post. Good noobs read, do their homework, and, if they don't understand some details, ask absolutely legit questions. I never had ANY problems with such a noobs - I see, the guy trying to know and understand details, and I (and any elder) always happy to help - answering the question, posting links, and replies in PMs. Such a noobs are very welcome here.
@Q5? - my facepalm won't turn away a "bad noob" - he determined to grab his watch, and he don't care, if somebody will even piss at his face. HE DON'T CARE.
@Rudy40 - you was a "good noob", that's why you're still here, and learning, mate. How to fix it? That's very, very good question.
So, we came to the point, that our Forum isn't perfect. Nothing is. But!!! We (and Administration) can fix it easily. I proposed a few "draconian" rules, Davylloyd proposed another one, and it's great one.
So, finally, we all came to the point, where we all can propose something, and Administration can take it to consideration, filter it, discuss it, and make changes.
Bravo, gentlemen, now we see the best of this forum - democracy!!!
Let's do it!!! Please, continue to post your practical proposals.

I literally read a thousand thread's before i even posted on here. Saw too many noob's posting stupid questions which sometimes made me cringe. I found this place because a mate of mine has a few reps so i did some searching and stumbled upon RWI. I'm still careful what i say and still read a ton of info on here every week, and probably have only just scratched the surface. I now own 9 reps and am hooked thanks to RWI. And i agree that if a noob jump's right in and asks a dumb ass question without reading anything they should accept the consequence of what is said after ;)

Excellent post Mitch. Thinking back I don't think I asked too many dumb asre questions. :D:

I know I'm like many on here that I take away more information than I contribute. I was truly staggered by the wealth of knowledge to be found within this forum.

The posting by ALE7575 on Pams are a labour of love, filled with so much detail. I've seen references to them from Gen Forums.

It's only a busy life and so many other things going on at the moment that stop me from becoming totally addicted.

Good luck, Phil

Mitch, there is no F'ing way I'm reading all that shit LOL, but I see your point. Also Luths insane rules are BS and will help no one.

New members are what keeps a forum going with new buyers and while the same old questions do get boring and mundane it will never stop because most guys aren't looking to find a watch chat forum their looking to find a rep and in their mind the best rep for the lowest price.

Look, when I found Amazon and bought products there I didn't start looking around for thier discussion area, no I went there to buy something, thats it, and thats what a lot if not most guys who come by here do. Their looking for a replica, they stumble upon us, and wonder if this site is for real or another scam site.

Now of course out of those that do find us we will keep a certain number of those as members because they will find out we all have a common interest but for the most part guys come here to get thier replica and maybe come back again for the next one but aren't really looking for a home.

I am with sub on this one.

People come and go, but the majority are not here to stay - they regularly view the sales area, but don't participate in any other way.

Participation should be encouraged, but it is in no way mandatory and you can not force it. Make it too hard and you will drive people somewhere else. By doing this you will also loose the ones that genuinely have an interest and would otherwise have stuck around.

Thank you.

Well Hello there stranger! I see Mrs Sub is nowhere around the computer today! We've missed you,,,,, as odd as it may seem it takes a voice like yours and Yes Luth's too and even mine for our collective voices to make up the wonderful personality of this place..... even Beemer lol

And frankly Sub when the senior members go quiet for fear of reprisal it makes this place not nearly as interesting...

My thoughts are while trying to remain friendly there still need to be some of the conversational Harry Kary that makes this place what it is,,,, remember we all voted for Sub to be member of the year and it wasn't for reading the noobs bedtime stories..

I am not sure that implementing any major restrictions for new members would benefit the site all that much. I think that you may always get the "who has the best sub" type people. Preventing new members from asking questions could turn those that really do want to learn away and prompt them to join other groups. I don't think that would be good for the community here. I joined all the major rep sites but have chosen this one as my favourite and "go to website". If I had not been able to ask questions or been able to search certain content because I was not allowed to, it may have pushed me towards one of the other sites.

I know it sucks for the senior members to see the ridiculous questions from fly by night members but it is a small price to pay for being a member of a community that is awesome. I compare it to when I was younger. I worked at a grocery store as a kid. Greatest job I ever had. Each week the front page items of the flyer were loss leaders and the store actually lost money on them. The owner just cringed at the people who came in, bought a ton of the loss leaders and left without purchasing anything else. They went from store to store doing the same. Did he provide them with the same wonderful treatment as everyone else... no. But he did silently tolerate them because he had to... yes. It just made him appreciate his faithful shoppers even more. In the end he still prospered despite the people who gouged him.

The few suggestions that I could throw out there is to first and foremost continue having these conversations. It promotes the new members who want to learn to get involved and maybe not feel so nervous. Hearing people like Luthier say he is willing to give a hand to a person who needs it, makes me feel much more reassured. I know after reading his postings on this thread, I would be more apt to ask Luthier a question and not be worried about a negative reprisal.

My other suggestion deals with the VIP membership. I believe that regardless of post count, after a certain amount of time a person needs to ante up and pay back. I posted almost nothing compared to most but because I have used this website to gain a lot a knowledge and essentially save me money from making poor purchases that burned me, I felt it was time to pay up and support the website. If there was a way of tracking how much a person used the website and after a certain amount of time say they have to step up to VIP membership, I would be more then ok with that. Bottom line is you have to pay to play just like everything else in life.

My last thought is the simplest. People still need to have fun. Although I am worried about getting blasted and told off, I can take some ribbing. By keeping posts light hearted and poking some harmless fun at others, you make the posts more enjoyable to read.

From a personal point, I think I need to post some shorter replies. I am sure nobody wants to read a novel every time I think of something to add to the conversation.

What I really don't understand is where you get off trying to judge noobs. I think a healthy amount of them are turned away by your facepalms and general rudeness. When we have "elders" who understand that they aren't Confucius, then I think people might actually stop and contribute, instead of feeling unwelcome.
