Whats you limit on gen

With all the gen makers going price crazy I've been wondering what the spending limit is to most guys. This isn't a post to ask about income or wealth its a hypothetical question, as I'm sure all of us have different lifestyles, expenses, and income.

So suppose your a average middle class to upper middle class (not an elitest moneybags type) family guy, nice house (probably not paid off), a couple of car payments, and all that shit, you get the idea.

For me as I post this I call my limit about $5,000 at the very top (of course this may vary for others), a few years back you could really get a lot of watch for $5,000 and under. Consider the basic Rolex sub is around $8,500 (way overpriced), or a Omega PO about $5,000 now (also way overpriced) I paid about $2,200 for mine new in 2007 and about $4,200 for a new Rolex that same year.

I do realize these are luxury watches and no one needs one but I feel Rolex and Omega and many others have priced themselves away from the mainstream customer. Now if you visit TRF you would think everyone is buying a new Rolex, no expense spared, however I don't think this is reality to most.

I went to the Omega boutique last night, nice store but the pricing is a joke, no discount, full retail, and a couple of know it all snobs behind the counter who reminded me of high pressure sales men, but I'm no push over and didn't buy shit, however I did wear a gen SM to at least give the appearance that I wasn't just a window shopper and may be a actual buyer.

I was stunned by their new price structure, not shocked because I had a good idea of the pricing from online shopping. I own five gen Omegas and purchased eight Omegas in my years of being a watch guy. My point is that pricing is out of control and these non discount botiques do nothing to help the brand, infact I think it almost alienates them from the customer who wants a nice luxury watch but doesn't want to max out thier credit for a F'ing watch. So where do you draw the line and are you willing to go into debt for a watch??

I would have a $10K limit total on all my gens. Whether that's a single $10K watch, or 10 $1K watches, I guess that depends on how I feel at the time.

5-6K is my limit. I would never charge a watch or go into debt to purchase a watch. You are correct! The salespeople in watch "boutiques" seem to be taking more classes in the "art of being rude and generally unfriendly". I just leave if they exhibit this behavior.

4k.

funny thing about a boutique.. i walked into one a while back and the sales guy there was extremely pushy on trying to sell me a sub. I told him that i just bought a watch recently and he asked me where... I told him I got it online on the forums and he gave me this look, he then in a snobby attitude told me that I was probably scammed and all internet sellers are fake. I told him that plenty of people deal over the internet. He then went on to say how their store sells the most rolex out of everyone..

I'm just thinking to myself.. no shit you sell the most, all the dumb ***** with too much money and not enough brains walk into a bed bridge to buy a rolex

Too bad I was with my girl, otherwise I would have told him that.

I don't know my limit, have to ask my wife, but what's the point to waste $10-$30K on gen., if reps are almost perfect nowadays? Just to tingle your ego? Nobody give a shit anyway.
And... most important - you buy same gen, that anyone could buy at any AD. Reps collection is a fun - V1, V3, V7,5, etc... who got what... where, how mucho, etc... Excitement!!!
Fak gens. Period. Had a few hi-end, sold, and happy.

My limit would be whatever the best price I could negotiate on a PP5711. Anything beyond that price-point just becomes stupid-money in my (current) world of financial capability.

Probably around $5k. Unless I really had to have it, I might be able to fork over the extra $5k

Great to hear other people thoughts, interesting as well.

I could never see $10,000 for just one, to me that seems insane. Even if I was to consider having more funds then I'd ever need I'm still not sure I would spend $10,000 for one watch, maybe I would but its hard to imagine any justification for that amount. You can't live in it or drive it, its not a good investment, don't think its gonna make me feel any different, and I see no value in spending that much.

We all have our limits on everything we buy a house, car, boat, watch, ring, or whatever it is. Some are things we need some are things we don't.

I don't buy things especially watches for a status symbol, but I know many do and that's fine but I never go into debt unless necessary, thats the rule for me. But even having the funds to blow with no regret I do have a limit on what I will fork over for any watch.

Used to be 5k. Now my woman wont let me even pay for service on them. She sincerely believes that i have a serious problem with watch addiction. I told her that it could be worse and i could be on math.

So nowdays i have to sneak around to buy 21j reps.

I buy watches like cars, everything gently used and pre-owned. I rarely pay for anything brand new except replicas and underwear. Watches can take a beating and if I spent 5 grand or more for a watch I would be nervous wreck for fear of putting a nick in it.

Guess I'll be the odd man out here. I would only pay a few hundred on a Gen, as of now. Something like a Seiko Diver, etc. To this day, I have yet to find a watch I like enough to pay that kind of money for. Im too indecisive and I would much rather have a decent rep I can consider a throwaway instead of trying to sell a used $5k watch and take a larger hit.

To be precise 8,500$ for a gen and not more than 400$ for a rep.

10-15k on SS watches, 25-30 on Gold watches. Yes it is an insane amount to spend on 1 watch, but so is spending 50k on a car, driving it for 5 years and then selling it for 15k...

I cant say I have some fixed limit.

Im coming up on 40, and the wife is considering a gen for me. My problem is that when I think of how much a gen is, and I can have only one new one, it makes me doubt whether I want to do it or not. I love the variety, and that's why reps do it for me.

She has asked what I would get if I could get one under 10k hypothetically, and I cant decide. I guess there are a couple of JLC master compressor models that if they were low enough I would have to take it, and a couple of Zenith's I feel that way about. Maybe a Tudor Pelagos. Nothing else makes me want to commit.

I explain to my daughter about boys/men, that we dont want to have the same food every day. We like the buffet model for eating and for females, and in this case watches. Why stick with one when you could have something different whenever you want?

Reps are my buffet - all you can eat.

All that was slightly off topic, but close. To directly answer Sub's question, if forced, I would say $4-5k is my real-world limit.
