I currently CC a revolver S&W and it is great I love it, however I think I would really like to cross over to a compact semi. I do not think I could carry a 1911 although they are beautiful! I am looking into the FN five seven I like the design it seems reliable and looks like a fun gun and has lots of capacity. Does anybody own one of these and can offer me some insight? Thanks! Always appreciate the help! :)

Oke, a lot are going to disagree with me here but here it goes.

When I carried it was in war zones, it's impossible to carry in OZ unless you are either a gunsmith in your shop or can prove your life is in acute danger. I carried a Bren10, a LES P-18 pr a mini Uzi. When i could not carry a visible bulge I used a Beretta Jetfire loaded with mercury tipped stinger.

However, for carry in a "civilised" country my choice would be a revolver much like you already carry. Why? because yoiu are not going to be dealing with a mob but one or maybe two attackers and as Jeff Copper himself once explained to me during a most informative chat I once had with the man (one hell of an interesting evening) most if not all confrontations in this situation are over in less than four rounds. If it isn't you are either badly trained or going to be dead regardless.

On that basis there is no better weapon than a wheel gun. Why? Because it points better (faster) and it can't jam at the worst possible moment. Jeff BTW agrees privately with this statement. If you feel the need for more rounds (you won't need them trust me) a speed loader fills a wheel gun as fast or faster than a mag swap on an auto.

In the field I have had to pull a handgun a dozen times in four plus years TTOG (total time on ground) in some of the world's greatest shitholes. Out of those I have pulled the trigger on five occasions (you don't forget, trust me). In none of those did I expend more than five rounds. I have copped a 9mm in the vest and believe me either a 38special or 38super to the chest is enough to stop anyone but a giant on crack and two to the chest and one to the head will stop even him.

Discuss.

I havent had that extensive period of time with handguns and luckily have never had to take it out or use it in any way other than the shooting range. There is nothing wrong with my SW and its always dead on and easy to clean and disassemble. My brother just purchased S&W SD40 and his gun shoots really nicely and it inspired me to look into the realm of semis. I have a Circuit judge which I love but it way too big to carry as its a rifle revolver. I have a SW .357 which is a range gun and a blast to shoot and my carry piece is sw 340pd. I did a little research and I really enjoy the five seven it is nice looking and reliable. But I do see what you are saying that more than likely I will never need 20+ bullet capacity unless I was going to start a drug cartel lol.

Quite. That and the fact you know it backwards means there is no reason to change. The weapon you need is the one you are most comfortable with.

In the wise words of a bloke of my acquaintance who has fired more handgun rounds in anger than I ever will: "People get all hung up over autos whilst autos just get hung up."

Good solid advice. I have told more than one person asking for carry advice to get a revolver and be done with it. The simplicity of it wins above all else.

Haha! I would agree with you on that that familiarity is very important. Do you carry anything now?

It is very simple and I guess thats the best part about it and I probably over looked that while my head got inflated with ideas of owning a semi.

I can't.
Out of some 25 million Aussies remove cops, security guards (and even then those transporting money and valuables only) and there would be less than 5000 people who can carry.

Google "Port Arthur massacre" and "gun buy back"
We can't even have a semi auto rifle or a pump action shottie any more.

At any rate CC has never been a viable option here, ever.
