I want to thank Boris for starting this thread. I think it has really made us examine why we do what we do.For us (the .9%) who really do care what is on our wrist, many points have been made. All very worthy. I think we can all agree that we like the "art of time" and if we cannot or will not spend 8K for a sub or 20K for a HBB, we know there is an alternative, and we are willing to take a chance to own a rep. We will never get a definitive answer...Aint life great??!! I am so glad to have found RWI..Thanks guys

TIME IS A LIE WE CHOOSE TO BELEIVE

Hey man, you welcome although I'm new here
This question is on my mind all time as a newbie
That spend big amount of money on reps on my terms...

I want to thank you all guys, my story I believe is
Same as many here, bought some gens as kid on streets dealers
Then last year bought some in Thailand on a trip in Bangkok ,
Then in last march I had bought rep for 500$
On some "trusted dealer" I found googling,
Then to my good luck I found rwi, and the rest
Is a history 6 gens in 3month and going,
I'm spending huge time here and lovin it!

I got "into" watches on TZ, back in the last century >>>

I soon realized that I couldn't afford to collect new ones, so I concentrated on vintage stuff..I learned how to shop for bargains doing that, and ended up finding a BNIB Omega Dynamic chrono on the "bay" with a $435. BIN price on it...I jumped all over it, and still own it...But when after @ 4 yrs, when I discovered that a factory service on it was going to cost more than I paid for it, I got into the rep scene...I soon discovered that by carefully scouring the rep f/s boards, some great bargains were occasionally available...I built my collection, concentrating on decent quality reps that were being offered up at low prices because they might have some small problems that I could fix myself using the knowledge I had accumulated by being around watches for so long...
I have drastically curtailed my buying lately, mainly because prices have gone whacko on many very ordinary models, but I did manage to pick up this one last week...It was in 95% new condition, but was lacking a CG screw, and it is an "old school" model 212, that has the lo beat 7750, and a non sapphire crystal...
The sapphire lack means nothing to me, since at my age, I don't get rough much any more, and the movement appears to be one of the nicer finished examples of that genre....And I was able to find a replacement CG screw for it in my junk drawer...When I was able to negotiate a 2 figure "delivered" price on it, I jumped!!:

I have bought virtually dozens of very nice watches like that, and I even wear my Omega Dynamic once in a while too!!

Before finding out about reps and these forums I had a genuine ETA quartz omega seamaster with a dead movement. Omega AD kindly offered to replace the movement and 'service' the watch all for the sum of £560! A local watchsmith replaced it with the exact same ETA movement, all be it without Omega markings, for £65.

The downside? My genuine omega would no longer be recognised as original and authentic and I would not be able to get any further servicing, parts, authentication etc.. from an AD. Basically I had a 'genuine' fake! That was the last time I had any involvement with gens. It's easy to forget the ongoing service costs on a watch and if you don't go with an AD you can pretty much kiss your 'authenticity' and investment goodbye.
