I'm watching the news and it looks like we're in for a third night of looting and rioting. What the hell is wrong with these people?

Seriously, do they wake in the morning and think, 'What do I do tonight? Might as well go out and torch some businesses, smash up some shops, set fire to a few cars and buses, put a few police officers in hospital'.

Great advert for a city that's hosting the Olympics in 11 months.

Sorry to admit this, Badwin, but I've been a bit preoccupied with our own domestic issues here in the Colonies lately and as such I have no idea what's going on in the UK.
What are the riots about?

Some black guy whose brother was shot (by the police??) a couple of years ago was in the back of a cab with a gun, the armed police turned up, something happened (yet to be officially determined and released to the public), he got shot dead.

There were riots a number of years ago (25?) that also came about through the death of a black man involved in a police incident.

A peaceful protest was disrupted by people intent on causing trouble, linked or not to the past events.

this kind of blind rage is triggered. it is the symptom of a larger problem. not the result of a shooting. i wish you the best of luck. if i were you i would have an exit plan. friends or fam in the country perhaps? this is not too serious yet but if i lived near a major city there i would have a way out planned. especially if i had a family.

it is also symbolic that many of the top gvmt folks were on posh summer vacations while the city burned....

income inequality is a serious problem in society. not just something you read about in a book. this stuff matters for a reason.

I live in Enfield (North London) and the riots over here and in the very nearby Tottenham have been crazy, I've never seen anything like it.

Hundreds of people outnumbering the police, rioting and looting every store they come across. I've seen people walking out of stores such as PC World with a trolly full of Macbooks and other electronics, and tons of people walking down the street with plasma televisions, speakers, sat navs etc. These people obviously are disguised with hooded tops and scarves/masks on their faces so they are very hard to identify. The police let them loot for the whole night as there was nothing they could do until the next morning.

I have just got back from the supermarket (Tesco) and they are closing at 7pm because they are preparing for the riots and they were broken in to last night. All of the other supermarkets in my area have been closed for the day because they were robbed the night before and completely trashed. I've had friends who have had there car smashed in and broken in to, other peoples cars and been set on fire, its ridiculous.

The police look so vulnerable and are not doing anything particularly to help to situation. If this was any other country the police would have been far less conservative. There are rumors that tonight the rioters will be targeting a new area (Edmonton Green or Waltham Cross) so stay away from those areas if there's any Londoners here...

Hope this gets sorted soon but I can see it going on for a while yet. Absolutely horrible to see the place you were raised as a child up in flames

At least, that's what we hear all the time here - since we created slavery and were the only country in the world that discriminated against minorities... and still do. That's all I've ever heard in school and especially on the nightly news and talking head shows anyway.

I wish you guys good luck and safety. If you need a little help, the Texans in the Dallas area alone are probably far more armed than the entire police forces in the UK. For the record, I'm nowhere near London. From my opening sentence to this thread I can see how some would think that, but I meant 'we're' as a country.

America did not "create" slavery nor do I think we are the "only country" that discriminates against minorities. We just developed our own version of that particular problem.

I do agree that reasonable, responsible armed citizenry might serve as a deterrent in a few isolated circumstances. I also think that our law enforcement are nowhere near being emasculated so as to allow this situation to progress. For now at least.

I would concur with that sentiment. Have a plan and keep everyone close.

Welcome to the future gentleman. There will be two sides to this argument, as well as everyone in the middle who either doesn't know about it or would prefer not to. Expect both sides to become more strident as time goes on.

It looks absolutely crazy, I've only seen rioting like this in the suburbs of France. I'm not sure of the story behind it but it just looks like alot of people looking to cause trouble with no real excuse or reason.

I just hope that they don't leave it too long to act, and if this is spreading to other parts of England as Cee has indicated, then a decision will have to be made pretty much immediately.

I still rekon they should send in the para's, or even just threatening to unleash them would send these morons running in fear.
