Hello everyone, I am in the market for a lightweight mid caliber carry gun for work. Would like something in 380 or 9mm. I am VERY used to the 380(BERSA) but am I wrong in thinking it isn't enough power? All of your opinions will be much appreciated!

And by the way, my budget is around $450

That's great that you mentioned the Bersa 380 as that is one of the handguns that I own. It is a great feeling gun all around and very low profile. My handgun that I cherish the most is my Glock 23C 40 caliber with the compensator port on the barrel. It literally is as loud as my AK47 and definitely packs a punch. Unfortunately those are all safe queens as the handgun of my choice for home security is a good ol' cheap Taurus 38 special. Nothing fancy, but I prefer a revolver as my go to gun. Never, ever got to worry about jamming and loaded with hollow-points will not help with any open casket funerals for any douchebags. I'm going to be posting pictures of watches soon with some creativity with some of my guns. Good luck with your job, but honestly, although not as popular as a semi-auto handgun, I would get a revolver. I've experienced to many stove-pipings with autos over the years and that could cost you your life. The Glock on the other hand has never had any issues, but don't really like the absence of a safety on it. My 2cents!

If this is for security work, I would buy and carry whatever the local police uses.

Exactly.

You don't want to be carrying a Wilson Combat .45 that's all tricked out. That just screams "I'm a badass"....not a good thing in the case of a justifed shooting.

Also find out what sort of rounds the local PD carries...and duplicate it.

My $.02 for what it's worth.

And whatever you can afford to replace on a moments notice.

Go with the KISS principal. Mainly a Glock 17/19 9mm. Parts and mags (plus duty gear) are readily available everywhere and fairly inexpensive.
9mm ammunition can be had in multiple flavors, all equally effective. Keep one thing in mind, there is NO magic bullet. All you can do is fill the target with holes, then let the blood seep out and the air seep in.

Look into Smith & Wesson M&P series (full sized), I have one that is my every day carry. I have a few dozen pistols and assault rifles, some of which I have a grand or two in but I trust my life to a .40 compact M&P that I bought used from a cop for $375, I love that gun. I prefer .40 but some people dont like the poppy recoil, if not then go with a 9mm. I would stay away from .380, it can kill someone (hopefully you dont get put in that situation), dont get me wrong, but its just a slightly weaker caliber. I also carry H&Ks and my bedside gun is a Glock 19, but for the price and overall feel I say M&P

That's strange. My Glock has THREE safeties on it.
Correction, I also have the "safe action trigger" on my Glock. I should have stated that It lacks a traditional safety. If you or someone else accidently mishandles it and there finger is on the trigger, it will fire, as a gun with a traditional safety "on" won't do anything at all, unless you push the safety button "off." I have a Folbus holster that if you are not careful when pulling your gun out of it, your finger can end up on the trigger and you might be walking with a limp. Mainly only if you don't have a good grip on your gun, your reflexes just my take over in trying to keep your gun from hitting the pavement. Not likely to happen, but I am always very careful as it can be quite a trick jerking your gun out of those holsters. If you aren't pulling straight up that gun isn't coming out of that holster. The good thing is that no-one else is likely to grab your gun from you out of that holster. Definitely something I need more practice at. Definitely won't ever be drawing my gun out as it will already be out and ready. The Bersa is equipped with a key locking mechanism that is great if you want that extra protection from someone finding your gun, like children. Easier to pop the key in than grabbing it out of a safe or taking off a gun lock.

I have decided on a Glock 19. Compact, lightweight and I am deadly accurate with it.

Sounds good Bruce and may you carry it in good health. May you only have to pull it out at the range. Good luck with your job.

Excellent choice, Bruce. On behalf of the eleventy-bazillion police officers, military members and civilian gun-totin' folks around the world who haven't yet shot their toe off with a Glock, I congratulate you on your superlative choice of firearm.

Next up: Practice, practice, practice. Then get serious. About practicing. ;) (And as waddster's saying, keep your booger hook off the "bang!" switch, until you mean it.)

And enjoy your 19. It's a great gun.

And G30, I stand corrected. :)

Sorry to disappoint but I decided on an old favorite. Got a HELL of a deal on a Taurus pt111. Traded a rep 111J for this duo tone 111 pro today. Came with: 3 hi-cap mags, hard case, leather thumb release holster. I thought it was a great deal!

If I was an armed guard, I would have to pick a M&P .40 or .45, a Glock .40 or .45, or a basic 1911. I want knockdown power and capacity. The biggest thing is picking a firearm that you are accurate with and will not bother you carrying everyday. I shoot 1911's the best on any gun I have ever owned or used. I would also ditch the thumb break, too slow..for a SERPA CQC or tension screw open top holster i.e. Desantis Speed Scabbard.

Nice choice, nothing at all wrong with the Taurus, it's a good, cheap piece of kit and quite accurate enough for security work. May you never need to draw it in anger my friend.
But if you do remember, two to the chest, one to the head and one into the floor in that order. "Yes officer, I fired a warning shot but he kept coming." Also remember dead scumbags can't sue.

As had been said, practice, practice, practice regardless of the fact you have had one before. Every gun has it's quirks and your life may depend on this one!
