i saw a guy at the bar with a sub on last week. he was nice, bought the whole bar a round. we talked for a bit, he spoke a bit of english and wanted to practice. nice guy. the subject of watches never came up, could have been real could have been fake. my point is, most people won't know or ask, of the people that know most know not to ask (politeness). what is the difference? real or fake? i kind of feel like asking about the authenticity of another persons watch is rude. the only way i would rip on someone for a fake is if it was this one :)

Calling someone out on a rep or a "fake" watch is like calling out a girl with fake breasts....First, usually it's none of your business if they are real or fake. You're definitely not in any position to voice your opinion, especially if you're a complete stranger. Second, if they look good and feel good, and they do the job... who cares. I'm referring to the watch of course.

With the cost of gens significantly outpacing inflation, spending your hard earned dough is a bad financial move. To many people think a good gen as an investment that will always hold its value when actually most depreciate significantly then you have the maintenance cost.

I have a few reps that still work from before I joined this site without any service... and when they stop running I can throw it away and buy 2 more for the price a gen service would cost me.

If you really want a GEN , buying it new from an AD is not a good idea, financially. You can pick up GEN's so much cheaper on forums. Just have it looked at , or examine paperwork. I've been seeing some great Breitlings pop up under $2k in the last few weeks. Jaw dropping !

Great thread!

No one has so much as questioned me yet.

Edit: I take that back. One of my old co- workers saw my DSSD Pro- Hunter and said "I didn't know Rolex made black watches." I just smiled and said "They do."

My opinion is that if you carry yourself well, people will not question your watch. Most people do not know the details nor do they know what movement is in a watch. For example, I had made a watch with a PAM 111 dial, a Jackson titanium case and a 202a caseback to hide the cheap movement, and a handmade strap. This watch was an abomination, but it looked nice. My friend commented on how nice the watch was, and that he would like to purchase one (he thought it was legit). So the moral to this story is, unless someone is on these forums and knows the details, I would not think that they would be able to spot a rep.

The reality is most of us on the forum are waaaaay too deep into watches. No matter gens or reps - we simply like watches. When I watch TV I always try to see what kind of watch the guy is wearing, and I do notice what other people are wearing. If the watch they are wearing is interesting I tell them. It's a great conversation starter especially in a social or business situation. Just last week I was flying in Germany - the guy in the seat next to me was wearing an old sub (circa 1980.) I said that's a very cool old sub. He told me the whole story behind it. We then had a discussion of watches for the rest of the flight. Turns out he has a a couple of gens and reps, like me. He loved my rep GMT II - in fact he couldn't believe how nice it is thought it was gen until I told him it wasn't. So here we have a guy who knows gens AND reps and thought my rep was gen. It's a nothing special rep 21j WBK to be precise - once I pointed out the "tells" he was still impressed.
