Tell that to all the makers of breitling reps, aquaterra reps, deville reps, longines reps, tag heuer reps, etc. the list goes on for dozens.
Your argument makes little sense. It is not as unidimensional as you suspect it to be.

Never, the market just isn't there.
Look at the gen situation and compare to the Daytona (which similarly has required the making of a complex clone movement to get an accurate rep). That base movement sells in its thousands, both to the rep and the gen watch market. It's so good, it has itself been copied!
If I want a Daytona I'm still even now getting 150+% of MSRP out on the secondary market, an AD is laughing at me.
If I want a Speedy the AD will do me a discount, and credit, there and then, and next door there is a secondary market on for way less than 60% of MSRP (and I'll get a £350 gift card) and the watch is (relatively) cheap in the first place.
A new Daytona rep from a TD is not a cheap rep, is the market there for a near £1000 rep of a watch you can pick up gen for <£4k? <£3k on eBay

While that is true most of them use readily available ETA movements or so to say clones of said calibers.
There was once a time when it became inevitable to develop such movements to subsidize the use of cheaper alternatives and get closer to their gen counterparts and yet be able to use those movements for the micro brand market.
As some members correctly pointed out the simpler lemania base caliber doesn’t seem to be protected by any patents anymore. It‘s use in the „gen“ world is common - look at the use of the ST19 in asian micro brands. Same thing applied to (asian) ETA or sellita or even miyota movements.
This investment is by far one of highest safety in regards to an easy ROI but what else really is? A new 3135 rolex clone among 3 other readily available options? Or a new 4130 variant besides an already proven and sturdy option?

Those thinking the speed master is attainable and therefore factories have no incentive to replicate it are seriously delulu. The watch is an icon and there are many that could not afford this watch, especially the special editions. Plus, I bet many would love to create vintage versions too. Like others have said, Panerai, longines, tags are still being replicated and many of these watches can be had for less than your avg speedy.
I have a gen speedy and hoping they come out with a good effort so I can buy an Ed White.

I found RWI back in the day, because I was looking for a Speedmaster. I remember being disillusioned finding out that of all watches, the Speedy was pretty much one of the shittiest reps around and that there wasn't going to be a proper one anytime soon.
I fell in love with other watches, acquired them in rep and had mystery fix, but I kept longing for my first love so much, that I had to get myself a gen Moonwatch.
Still, it's going to be a very good day when the first rep pictures (with the proper dial spacing and thickness) appear here. Better still, if the tells will be minor. Fingers crossed fellas!

Similar to myself. Funny thing is, I’ve now spent double the cost of a brand new gen Speedmaster Pro on franken/modded reps. Still no speedy.
Once the factories produce a new model sub dial correct speedy and iwc top gun chrono, I’m out of the rep game…

You know, people with statemenst like “the market isnt there” are very funny to me.
Theres a near perfect replica of a JLC Ultra Thin for couple hundred bucks in various finishes, theres full gold CNC milling shops for custom cases for tens of thousands and anything in between.

An accurate Lemania clone, especially vintage models fit, will sell as hotcakes. Soooo many modding projects, sooo many opportunities to build something special.
And not having to worry about servicing, parts, reliability, performance, visual accuracy, etc etc, is a large set of incentives.
Someone said in the beginning that there are no Moonwatch / Speedy experts and while that is an overstatement, it is generally so.
I know grand total of 2 people that carry Omegas parts catalogs in their heads and even they are not 100% a lot of the time.
And the amout of people that just I know (and Im really really not into Moonwatches) that got ripped off with rebuilt, franken, or all together rep (wanna say shit in this case) movements and its parts, pushers, crowns, etc is just silly. Even from very reputable sources.
Whats now happening on the markets for various reasons, will have a huge impact on the gen watch firms and their perceived value, as well as skyrocket the rep scene.
And mark my words, if they can actually start production, this will be a big deal to many.
Speedy is up there in peoples minds, its just that almost nobody thinks the gen piece is worth the money.

Other than die-hard Speedmaster fans and NASA, this watch has serious flaws for everyday use. No one would buy the Speedmaster, if they can get the Daytona for retail. Its too big, ugly, impractical (manual wind). It's a hard sell as gen (as evidenced by the used market) and even harder as a $800 rep.
