So what exactly happened with Rolex's 1908?

Watch and Wonders debuted this watch a year ago and.... absolutely nothing on this watch

It seems that it's either very rare or not even in the mind of modern collectors...

And absolutely kaput on the replica front even though this watch is a very easy fake - smalls seconds 3 hander watch...

So did Rolex flop with this model?

.

Even in Chrono you'll only find 30 examples up for sale :

I think in my eyes, if you're gonna drop 30k on a pure dress watch, Vacheron, Patek, and AL&S have far better models for less... a vintage Calatrava is 1/3rd the cost of a 1908 with more tradition and history....

Looks like a miserable marketing fail... Sad, I liked it, but for that money....
Rolex maybe doesn't do leather dress watches very well... we can see when there's no hype for a Rolex model what it turns out to be....

On a side note I did some researching and found this absolutely mid-low tier replica of the 1908...

It's sad, been waiting on a decent rep of the black dial in white gold.
Nice looking dress watch with the perfect dimensions imo.
I like the hands the most out of the watch!

But Rolex didn't exactly go to the school of dress watches

The coin fluted bezel is too goofy in the modern era in my opinion

The "superlative chronometer"is horrible on a dress watch, and quite frankly I think they need to redo the 12-3-6 markers which break the symmetry of the watch. It's unfinished and lacks direction

Thats true, they seem to have some struggles in that department 😅

A 50509 with small seconds and an exhibition case back would be an instant buy for me. I really appreciate the clean aesthetics of the 50509 dial, but it's a bit boring on its own.

I think the bezel must be an homage to their best known watches. Doesn’t bother me but I agree it would look better without it.

I also agree Rolex messed up the dial with “superlative chronometer”.

I think you meant 12-3-9 markers and, again, I agree. A smaller subdial to accommodate a marker at the 6 position would help. I do love the open 9 though.

I see a resemblance to A. Lange & Söhne’s 1815 which is much cleaner but also has a weird 6.

That said, @Reaps it doesn’t look so bad that I wouldn’t buy one. Where did you get it?

I typically avoid gold plated reps because of color but @Reaps isn’t bad. I see they marked your gold case as platinum with pt950 markings. Really sweet looking rep regardless of the markings.

interesting that this thread was made

and perfect timing.. before April 9

what do you suppose this is?

one of the new watches is rumored... to be.. a 1908 variant  pay attention to the edges of the dial.. that is a 1908 signature

Is that guilloche dial the first high horology aspect of a rolex watch to date? Beside precious metals.

The issue with the 1908 by Rolex is that the MSRP is close to US$30,000 when you factor in tax in most states. For just a few thousand more, you can buy a new Patek Calatrava 6119, so it literally makes no sense to buy the Rolex. Rolex made a big mistake by pricing the 1908 so high… I think the only people that are going to actually fork over the cash for a 1908 are people that wanna improve their chances of getting a Daytona with their Rolex dealer.

There’s no shortage of Rolex’s and nobody is building relationships with AD’s. Those are stories from people that were flipping watches when the government was giving out checks for the pandemic. That government tit dried up over a year ago. If you want a genuine Rolex go to the AD closest to your home and buy one. He’ll have whatever model you want. .
