My Autos Dont Work in Watch Winders

I posted this on one of the other forums but would like more feedback

Have a 21J Cartier Santos and 21J Ulysse Nardin that I bought from one of the forum dealers. Both stop in the watch winder and never start again. The cartier doesnt keep time well and has some quality build issues so I had to return that anyway. The Ulysse Nardin keeps fabulous time, except that today I had to actually wind it after wearing it for 6 hours with no wind.

So at some some point the Ulysse's time stops in the winder too and when observing the unit rotating the watch (33 secs every 10 minutes), the watch remains stopped and never ever gets going again. I have also tried both, Clockwise and CCW and still no luck. Yet, as soon as I remove it from the winder to put it on my wrist, the secend hand starts again. I dont get it?

I actually ordered 2 winders and will decide which one to keep if I can get my watches to work in them. Otherwise I will have to return them

Below are my watch winders

If your watch stops after you've worn it 6 hours, there's something wrong with the auto-winder. Nothing to do with the watch winder. Likely an easy fix if you know what you're doing. (Sorry, I can't help you with that.)

Can't tell you what the problem with your watches is, but I always recommend keeping away from non-vertical winders. I.e., yours turn watches on a slant, rather than fully vertically. Here's a random example of what I mean... these tend to be better.

Something wrong with your watches. No reason a 21J movement wouldn't thrive in even the cheapest of winders.

someone else from another forum suggested that. I will tip the winder so that ITS vertical and see if that does it.

Both my reps are new and both stopped in the winder. I bought them from a forum dealer. My cartier rep I returned becaue it stopped even stopped when wearing it. My other rep meanwhile stopped at 2:30 pm today but I did not wind it in the morning. Problem may be with the auto winders like someone said but 2 of them?

I'm kind losing confidence in the reps but I tell you what. I have a local rep friendly watchman who services my gens and if he could make the 21J's keep ticking period, including in diagnal winders, then I'll have him do it. I dont have the patience to keep sending reps back to China, NFW. If I like the external looks of the rep I'd rather let someone take care of it locally. That seems to be a common sense approach with these reps IMO

Well, if this happened to a serviced gen, I'd be seriously concerned of course. But remember that these are cheap reps usually assembled in dirty places and unserviced... I can see why they may need a little more help to wind. I wouldn't give up on reps just because of that.

Also, most Asian movements only auto-wind in one direction : try all options on your winder.
The option that turns in both direction is not good, as half of the time it will have no effect on your watch.

For A7750 and many "Asian 21J" the winder should be set to turn clockwise.

I did. What I did was I restarted the winder in a CW position (with the watch still in the winder) after the watch had already stopped. After the CW rotation I had observed the time remained stopped. Then I did the same in a CCW position. Second hand still remained stopped. Then I pulled the watch out of the winder and put it on my wrist and during that small 10 second time frame it started

Why are diagonal winders less desirable than vertical ones. I'm just about to buy this one

Sorry if this is a bit of a thread crap it's kinda relevant.

according to Rooster133's post in this thread, its because they dont always keep the watch going (the main topic of the therad) as well as the verticle ones.. He may be right. Yesterday I had tipped the winder to a vertical position and put my rep in it. Tonight I came home and she was keeping time. It was in there for about 30 hours.

This really sux. I like the my Diplomat Cherry wood winder. Diplomat makes a black double winder that's verticle but the cherry wood is so nice :(

I wish there was a way I can make my reps work in the diagnal-position winders

I tipped my winder close to vertical like I said I would and it "seems" to work. BTW, saw that same winder at Amazon and the only review was from a guy who said it didnt keep his Breitling going and he said the LED lights were cheap

Man, I wish there was a way to make my reps work in the diagnal winder I have without tipping it to close to vertical. Its a nice looking winder, that is when it in its natural position

Thanks for the the encouragement. I tell you, if the looks of the reps are acceptable and i can get a local wathcman to iron out small issues for just a few $$$, then i will be happy. That may be the road that I may have to take with reps. This is precisely why I bought the 21J models. I first wanted to get a feel for the outer quality and look. If I was happy with the look then I can always change address issues locally. I have a local guy who has serviced my gens and he is rep friendly.

Unfortunately the The cartier rep was sent back because I wasnt happy. But my Ulysee Nardin is fabulous looking! I dont think I will send this back even If I have winder isues, I'll just ge it taken care of locally for a few $$$ and ask the dealer for a small credit to absorb costs. Meanwhile I am awaiting my replacement Cartier Santos

My reps won't run consistently on the Acetimer. They will stop and start at random, and a couple won't run at all.
By contrast my Ocean7 and Orange Monster stay wound on it perfectly so it definitely seems to be an issue of unidirectional versus bidirectional winding.

i've always used Orbita brand winders and never had a problem. They have a model called Sparta that holds the watch at an angle and has a switch to set the number of revolutions.

how do you know its not the watch? perhaps certain internal winders will work in any watch winder and other internal winders may have issues? just guessing here

Many watches running the A7750 movement are known to stop on winders, as most do not have a high enough rotations per day setting to give the A7750 what it needs.
Otherwise, I have 3 AceTimer boxes and have had absolutely no problem with ANY of my watches (gen or rep or vintage) except my IWC 3717 which runs the A7750 (even though mine was serviced and cleaned).
If you're having problems with a watch running any other movement, then the problem is the watch and not the winder.

but even if a watch stops in the unit and you observe the rotational pad moving, the second hand of the wathc should atleast begin to move at that point. If the second hand remains motionless in CW and CCW modes (as in my case) , then I would think this is not a rotation numbers issue.
