Hi folks,

today I had some time to work on one of my watches and thought it might be interesting for one or another to see how a waterproofing works with a PAM.

It is not a real big challenge when you got the right tools but as I did this not that often so far it´s still a bit thrilling for me at least ;)

Ok, lets start...

today I am working on my PAM 029 B Series – I think it was made by DSN but I am not really sure. It was sold to me with a Swiss ETA and it just was stated as an ETA in the sales thread – because it ran very good and when winding it, it felt quite good I never thought about opening it - so this time it´s kind of a double thrill ;)

here it is...

I disassembled the strap, and the caseback...no big deal...

so let´s have a look at the movement...

Nice one...swiss made ETA 2836-2 everything looks clean and fine...so I had to remove the crown guard and the stem next...a bit different than on the 2864 where I had to loose a screw, here it is a pin that has to be pushed (do it with the stem pulled out in the time setting mode)

After that the O Ring got a silicon bath...

I removed the screws of the movementholder and took the movement with dial out of the case, put it aside and tried to avoid touching it

After that I took the O Ring out of its´bath and put it back to the case, and put the caseback back on the watch, greased the o rings on the stem and the case.

reassembled the crownguard and filled up the pressure tester with water.

After that I hung the case on the hook, closed the container and pulled the lever of the pressure tester until I reached 3bar

Time for an espresso as I had to wait for about three minutes before I can let the watch go diving...

FB191C0D-C2ED-431B-8431-BEED1FE821E2_zpsjyuavnek.jpg

After the espresso I let the watch go for a dive and released the pressure in the container immediately

If you can see bubbles rise out of the case you should remove the case asap out of the water....if you don´t see anything...drink another espresso...everything is ok.

FB191C0D-C2ED-431B-8431-BEED1FE821E2_zpsjyuavnek.jpg

I pulled the case out of the water, disassebled everything again and put everything back where it belongs...movement, movement holder, stem, o rings, caseback, crown guard and did the thing with hooking up the watch, pulling the lever up to 3bar, having another espresso and letting it go for a dive again....

This is quite thrilling again...it might not be funny to see water go in your watch anyway but if there´s an ETA movement inside it would be really annoying.

the bubbles you see here are no problem...

88F916AE-7A5C-4964-8B27-77A6CD05DB60_zpsakfnxjao.jpg

It seems like everything worked out well as you can see...no bubbles and moreover...no water inside the watch.

So as my result after all that - I don´t have to make up my mind of ruining my watches when I do the dishes for my wife, as she is more handsome when another package in a size everyone of us knows, arrives ;)

Thanks for your interest !

Great thread. But I have to call you out. No way you just took 3 Espressi and do not use exclamation marks! In addition, the espressi look all the same on your pics. Unless, you have some 1:1 Ultimate Reps of your first Espresso, i guess you just show off how much coffeine you can take while slowing dipping on your hot chocolate :p

I did not understand your comment as criticism...I am honestly glad for any input to reach a better level of the threads...

I´ve learned so much from a lot of great people here, of course including your amazing threads - I am happy to give something back into the community...if it goes better - I´ll do it better - or at least try to do so ;)

Great thread. Is there a rubber seal around / inside the case crown area? I only lubed the rubber pad on the stem ( plus the case back o ring). Hope this is enough. Haven't got a pressure tester. Quite keen on getting the Chinese bergeon copy on the bay though .

thanks mate! Yes there is a seal inside the casecrown area...I just took the toothpick and gave it some silicone, too...
I don´t know the qualitiy of the chinese copys but I think it´s worth to spend a few bucks more and you got the good stuff ;) there are popping used one of the originals on ebay from time to time...

but maybe someone here made an experience with the chinese testers?!

I've end up buying a Chinese pressure tester on the bay and should come in a few weeks. For about 1/3 of the price I will take a gamble. The device itself doesn't look too complicated in construction so finger crossed !

I have also bought a Bergeon 5555 yesterday. But 3 bar is a little bit less. If you want the real stuff you need one of these machines.

Great write up. I have a Chinese version of the same machine but goes up to 6 bar.
I prefer to do a proper water pressure test; put the watch (no movement), lower it into the water and the apply the pressure all the way to 6bar and then wait for 30 mins or so. Then take watch out and check if any water has entered the case.
I personally prefer this method as it is a true water pressure test and with higher pressure on the outside of the watch which would be more similar to real life situations.

Good to hear your feedback. I was under the impression that you can do it with the movement in (just watch out for bubbles..etc) . But your right that's probably more to real life situations

OK so got my Chinese repped bergeon 5555 and gave it a good go.

Cranked it up to 5 ATM, left watch out in air for 3 minutes, immerse into water then released pressure. Funny there seem to be a couple of big bubbles coming out from the crystals. (Only 2-3 large bubbles though) There were also some very very fine bubbles coming out from the crown area but it was hard to spot. I tried it on my other 2 pams and both showed this.

Then I tried it on my pam111 (which was professionally sealed and tested by a local jeweller)- same pattern of bubbles happen !

So I guess maybe I should ignore the above bubbles then ?

Never seen what a leak is suppose to look like. Anyone know ?
