Alright, guys. I have an opportunity to buy a Steinhart 47mm pilot's Limited Edition watch (one of only 55 made in the world), but it will mean I have to sell my PAM024A rep and my gen RWC 1938A to fund it. Is it worth it?

The specs on the Steinhart:

Modified center seconds Unitas movement with hacking capability.
Sapphire crystal front (with AR) and back.
47mm with diamond style crown.

Would you?

To be able to own 1 of the 50 made is an incredible opportunity!!!!!!! The watch and movement are impressive! By the way, I already have the cash set aside for your 024A

Just a warning, the 024A cost me a pretty penny, it won't be cheap....

I wouldn't. If I wanted that shape I'd settle for the 1/3 cost version with the ETA 2824.

It's too much of a premium for the custom movement. Unless I have missed something, from the observer its the same watch. only you, looking at the caseback would know its a special edition.

Unless you have some affinity for the company, the history behind the watch, or something else, what value does a limitied edition hold for you? Who is Stienhart? Yet another small swiss manufacture of watches, there are so many.

The money left over (if you sold the RWC and PAM rep) would allow you to purchase some other nice watch gen or rep. Just my $0.02

EDIT: The name Steinhart goes back to the early 1900's when Simon Steinhart was the manager for the watch company Schlenker & Kienzle.

Steinhart's manufacturing partners were established around 1850.

Ok they are an established company. But when I saw that watch all I could think was 'IWC'. It's still a homage. A Limited edition homage.

Polaris, thanks for your post.

However, I would argue that it is not an IWC homage. IWC was neither the first, nor the only maker to build pilot watches that look like this. It may be the most recognized currently, but that doesn't make every other pilot's watch an homage to the IWC BP.

Yes, the big draw for me is the movement. I'm a huge fan of 6497s and the opportunity to own this modified/decorated version of one housed in a watch design that I love is nearly irresistable.

It's a great looking watch, but personally I wouldn't. Steinhart doesn't really have the 'gen' credentials (at least, imho) to make me consider selling two very high quality watches (rep or gen) to do it - limited edition or no. And that's coming from another huge 6497 fan.

A gen PAM, though - now that would be a different story ;)

Hooli, I don't know if I should say what you wanna hear :p

But if you see yourself leaning towards the STEINHART more than your 024A, by all means... sell it.

I wouldn't though if I were you. But then again, this is comin' from a PAM guy

If you had to sell just the 24a then maybe... but 2 for 1 just doesn't make sense...

I'm guessing you're paying $1500-1700 for it... way too much IMO... another $1100-1300 gets you a gen 000J... 024's have dipped to $3,500....

In short, you're paying premium for this watch when other gens can be had used at a big discount...

I agree. Not worth it. Kinda generic looking.

Trent,

dont do it.
i know the Steinhart movement with on top-sitting ZENTRAL- SEKUNDEN-RAD ( central second wheel ? )
is tempting, but from the dial side still the same watch...

i would not sell 2 of your top reps for it.....

if you like the Steinhart so much !- buy the cheaper version. same dial.....beauty, though !

Well, that's about the same price that I can get the used Steinhart for. 47mm is on the upper limits of being too big, but 41mm is on the opposite end of my spectrum.
